Three named to Daktronics All-Region team

WICHITA FALLS – Three Tarleton Texans have been named to the Daktronics All-Super Region Four Team.  Kicker Garrett Lindholm and linebacker Marcus Phillips have been selected to the first team while punter Kyle Hopf was named a second team all-region selection.

Lindholm, a senior from Pflugerville, has made a name for himself this season after kicking two game-tying field goals and a game-winning boot.  The kicker made a school record 55-yard kick to defeat Midwestern State as time expired on Oct. 3 just 12 second of game time after he made a 36-yarder to tie the game.

Then, the kicker outdid himself with a 64-yard field goal to tie the first round playoff game at Texas A&M-Kingsville as time expired. He made a field goal in overtime as well, but it was his 64-yarder that brought national attention to the school and the player via USA Today, ESPN and, of course, YouTube.

The Texan finished the season 15-18 in field goals and 43-45 in extra points to lead Tarleton with 88 points.  Lindholm was perfect from beyond 50 and he was six-of-seven from 44 yards and further.  The 64-yard kick was the second longest in NCAA Division II history and the longest ever in the division's playoffs.

Lindholm also kicked off for the Texans and had an average of 63.4 yards per kick with 22 touchbacks this season.

Phillips was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Linebacker of the Year and had 97 tackles for the Texans in 2009.  The senior from Humble had 45 solo and 52 assisted stops this season, including 11.5 tackles for a loss of minus-36 yards.  Phillips recorded two and a half sacks for minus-11 yards while forcing one fumble.

A four-year letterwinner for the Texans, Phillips intercepted three passes and returned them for a total of 34 yards while breaking up five and defending eight others.

Hopf punted the ball 71 times this year for 2,795 yards, an average of 39.4 yards per boot.  He had a long of 59 yards against Abilene Christian on Oct. 24.  The junior from Llano recorded six touchbacks.  He also put 17 inside the 20-yard line.  Hopf had seven punts of 50 yards or more this season.

Tarleton finished the season 10-3 and was shared the LSC Championship and LSC South Division crowns.  The Texans reached the Sweet Sixteen of the football playoffs, advancing to the second round of the playoffs for the second time in school history.

The team, which is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems, is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
