KINGSVILLE – Marcus Phillips and Alonzo Horton led the West Team to victory in the 2009 Valero Cactus Bowl Friday night as the West defeated the East, 16-0.
Phillips, a senior from Humble, recorded five tackles, including a tackle and a half for a loss of minus-seven yards. He had two solo and three assisted tackles in the All-Star Game held in Kingsville at Javelina Stadium. He also recovered one fumble and also broke up one pass.
Horton, a senior from New Orleans, La., tallied two solo tackles on Friday night, including one tackle for minus-two yards.
The West scored 13 points in the second half to take the lead at halftime before a field goal to open the fourth and give the game its final totals.
The East recorded just 34 yards rushing and 87 yards passing for a total of 121 yards. The West recorded a total of 380 yards, including 243 on the ground and 137 through the air.
The Cactus Bowl is the annual NCAA Division II All-Star Game held in Kingsville every year. NFL scouts and other professional football team staff members attend the week-long events that give the scouts a good look at the Division II football players.
