SAN ANTONIO – The Tarleton men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2010 season at Incarnate Word on Saturday and brought home five first-place finishes to go along with 20 top-three performances.
“I was proud of the results we had,” Tarleton head track & field coach Pat Ponder said. “I liked how the athletes got to go out and compete against someone other than themselves and their teammates for once and overall I was pleased with the way they performed.”
In field events, Leslie Jordan opened the day with a first-place finish in the shot put for Tarleton as she had a throw of 12.96m. Maria Dominguez finished in second with a throw of 12.85m. Dominguez also finished second in the discus throw with a toss of 40.58m.
Casey Keeter put up a second-place effort for the men in the shot put with a throw of 15.20m. Hayden Eubanks came in second in the discus with a throw of 47.60m. His brother Nolan finished third with a toss of 46.80m.
Aaron Schickendanz placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.97m. Tyler Rushing came in third with the same height, but did it in more attempts than Schickendanz.
Tarleton opened the running events with a third-place finish in the distance medley relay. The ladies finished the relay in 8:59.89.
Danitra Marshall finished second in the women's 400 meters with a time of 59.85. Courtney Newsome followed in third-place with a time of 59.82.
The women's 4x400 relay team finished second overall with a time of 3:59.68.
The men's distance medley relay team finished in second-place with a time of 10:26.57. Chris Hearell then followed up with a first-place finish in the men's 1500 meters with a time of 4:02.98. Kolin Styles finish second overall with a time of 4:03.85.
Aaron Donohue brought home a first-place finish in the men's 400 meters with a time of 50.54. Chase Graf finished in third-place with a time of 50.84.
Fresh off his second-place performance in the 100 meters at the conference championships last season, Jamal Mays opened the season with a first-place win in a time of 11.10. He then placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.52.
Last season's Lone Star Conference Track Athlete of the Year, Jared McNeil, finished first in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:02.05. Styles came in third-place with a time of 15:25.66.
Both men's and women's teams will return to San Antonio this weekend for the Trinity Invitational. Field events are slated to begin at 11 a.m. with the first running event to begin at 11:30 a.m.
