MESA, Ariz. – The No. 7 Tarleton TexAnns are in first place after the first day of competition at the Ashland University Desert Invitational at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
The TexAnns shot an opening round 315 and are five strokes ahead of second place Grand Valley State (320). GVSU is ranked No. 2 in the country in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association poll.
No. 18 Cal State-Monterey Bay is in third place with a 322 while No. 6 Indianapolis is in fourth with a 327. No. 16 California (Pa.), No. 13 (tied) Angelo State and No. 8 Ashland are all tied for fifth with a 332. Carson Newman is eighth with a 333.
The TexAnns are led by Carla Cooper with a 77. The junior is tied with three other individuals for the lead after round one. Jacqueline Lau and Andrea Lowe are tied with three others for fifth with a 78 apiece while Katy Ward is tied for 16th with an 82. Melanie Tham has an 84 while Candice Brister shot an 88 as an individual.
The tournament will resume with the second and final round at 8:10 a.m.
