MESA, Ariz. – Despite an individual victory by leader Carla Cooper, the No. 7 Tarleton TexAnn golf team fell to third place at the Ashland Desert Invitational in Mesa, Ariz. after leading on the first day of competition. Tarleton shot a 627 to finish three strokes behind leader No. 18 Cal State-Monterey Bay.
Cooper won the event with a 147 after shooting 77 on day one and 70 on day two. She was five strokes better than the two second place finishers at the Longbow Golf Club.
The TexAnns led by five strokes after the first day of competition with a 315, but Tarleton shot a 312 on day two for the 627 to finish behind CSMB (322-302-624). No. 2 Grand Valley State finished second, rallying from a 320 to with a 305 on day two to finish two strokes ahead of Tarleton with a 625.
No. 6 Indianapolis finished fourth with a 639 (327-312), No. 16 California, Pa. finished fifth (332-309-641), No. 13 Angelo State finished sixth (332-313-645), Carson-Newman finished seventh (333-319-652) and No. 8 Ashland finished eighth (332-334-666).
Jacqueline Lau tied for 10th with a 157 (78-79), Andrea Lowe tied for 17th with a 160 (78-82), Katy Ward tied for 22nd with a 163 (82-81) and Melanie Tham was 31st with a 169 (84-85). Candice Brister competed as an individual medalist and tied for 40th with a 178 (88-90).
The TexAnns will return to action at the Grand Canyon Regional Preview in Goodyear, Ariz. on April 5-6.
