ABILENE – The Tarleton Track & Field teams will head to Abilene on Thursday, April 1, to compete in the 2010 McMurry Relays at Wilford Moore Stadium. Field events including the shot put, hammer and discus throws will begin at 10 a.m. over at Hardin Simmons University, while the other remaining field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at McMurry. Running events will begin at 2 p.m.
Both teams are coming off performances at last weekend's UTA/Bobby Lane Invitational at Maverick Stadium in Arlington. The men's team fared well on the day collecting one gold and three silver medals on the day while finishing 10th overall as a team. Casey Keeter bettered his NCAA Division II provisional mark in the shot put with a first-place toss of 16.67m. Jared McNeil (1500m), Kolin Styles (5000m) and Westyn Rosilies (3000m Steeplechase) each placed second in their respective events on the day.
The women's events were highlighted by Meredeth Persinger's provisional mark in the women's shot put with a throw of 13.44m and Elizabeth Dominguez's provisional standard in the discus with a toss of 43.00m.
Both men's and women's teams competed at the McMurry Relays last season and despite cold temperatures and blistering winds, Tarleton managed to do very well in the meet.
The women's team took home seven top-five performances, which included Kandis Brooks finishing first in the 400m dash (59.90) and Vanessa Elizondo taking second-place honors in the 1500m run (5:18.34).
The men's squad had 14 top-five performances which were highlighted by Keeter's first-place toss in the shot put (16.38m) and McNeil's first-place finish in the 800m run (1:56.28).
Tarleton has showed well at McMurry over the last 10 years as three former Tarleton Track & Field athletes still own stadium records at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Nicole Sharp set the stadium record in the women's 5000m run with a time of 18:09.60 back in 2002, while Olan Coleman set the record in the men's 200m dash with a time of 21.00 a year later. Collat Johnson still owns the stadium record in the men's high jump with a leap of 7 feet 01 inches back in 2000.
