TexAnns win third straight LSC golf title

THACKERVILLE, Okla. – The No. 5 Tarleton TexAnns won their third straight Lone Star Conference Golf Championship Tuesday with a four-stroke win at WinStar Golf Club in Thackerville, Okla.

The TexAnns needed a solid day to hold on to their top spot on Tuesday in the third round of the tournament.  Tarleton shot a 289 on day three to go with its 321 and 293 to finish with a 39-over par 903 to win the event.  This is the fourth LSC title for the TexAnns in school history.

“We've had a really great season, and we really wanted to win this tournament,” said Tarleton head coach Jerry Doyle.  “The competition was so good and everyone played really well. We have won a bunch of tournaments, but this was a big one for us. Winning is something we really wanted to do.  I am really proud of the way they played.”

West Texas A&M finished second with a 907 (318-297-292) while Angelo State finished third with a 912 (322-295-295).  Central Oklahoma was fourth with a 922 (322-304-296), Northeastern State was fifth with a 932 (321-309-302), Cameron was sixth with a 941 (328-309-304), Midwestern State was seventh with a 949 (331-315-316), East Central was eighth with a 978 (347-315-316), Texas A&M-Commerce was ninth with a 989 (353-327-309) and Southwestern Oklahoma finished the field in 10th with a 1035 (363-348-324).

Tarleton's Katy Ward was third individually with a 219 for the three days (77-70-72) while Carla Cooper tied a tournament low for a round of 68 on Tuesday.  She finished with a 225 (84-73) and tied for seventh.  Jacqueline Lau was No. 11 with a 229 (83-73-73), Melanie Tham tied for 16th with a 234 (81-77-76) and Andrea Lowe tied for 18th with a 235 (80-79-76).

The TexAnns will now move on to the Super Region Four tournament in Amarillo.  The tournament will be May 2-4 at the Tascosa Country Club.
