RICHARDSON – Tarleton had a total seven track & field athletes earn All-Lone Star Conference Track & Field awards the league office announced Wednesday.
Two Texans, Jared McNeil and Garrett Thomas, made the list of all-conference performers, as did five TexAnns that included Leslie Jordan, Courtney Newsom, Kandis Brooks, Danitra Marshall and Claire Goodman.
McNeil, a junior out of Saginaw, tallied 16 points at the LSC Championship meet that was held in San Angelo back on May after tallying a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 800m (1:56.45) and 3000m steeplechase (9:38.46) events and a third-place finish in the 1500m run (9:38.46). McNeil, a 2009 All-American, has taken home three straight all-conference team honors.
Thomas, a two-time All-American for the Texans, won his first ever LSC Championship event after taking gold in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 14.44. This is the first all-conference team accolade for the senior out of Gail.
Brooks, another two-time All-American, earned her third all-conference honor in four years while competing for the TexAnns. The senior out of Houston took third-place in the women's 110m hurdles finishing the event with her fastest time of the season (13.96). She then placed seventh overall in the 200m dash with a time of 25.48.
Brooks then teamed up with Newsom, Marshall and Goodman to take home the gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay. The quartet finished the 1600 meters in 3:51.07 to take the top honor.
Newsom, a sophomore from Longview, added to her all-conference numbers with a sixth-place finish in the 400m run (58.65) and a fourth-place finish in the women's high jump (1.57m). Marshall, a freshman from Itasca, took seventh overall in the women's 400m as well, finishing with a time of 59.38. Goodman, a sophomore from Stephenville, anchored the relay for the TexAnns.
Leslie Jordan collected 17 points in the LSC Championships - the most my any of the Tarleton athletes. The junior from Longview had two podium finishes on the day, finishing second in the shot put (13.25m) and third in the hammer throw (41.16m). Jordan then finished sixth in the discus with a toss of 40.98m.
Garrett and Brooks will both head to Charlotte, N.C., next week to compete in the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Preliminaries are set to get underway Thursday, May 27.
