SAN ANGELO – The Tarleton Track & Field teams got competition underway on Saturday at the Lone Star Conference Track & Field Championships at LeGrand Sports Complex in San Angelo, with the men finishing the day tied for third and the women sitting in fourth.
Field events including the hammer throw and shot put were completed on Saturday as were a few distance running events. Tarleton completed these events with five podium finishes and 22 top-10 performances overall.
Westyn Rosiles got things going on the men's side with a second-place finish in the men's 3000m steeplechase, finishing the event in 9:28.09. Kolin Styles (9:37.81) and Jared McNeil (9:38.46) finished right behind him in third and fourth, respectfully. Gerzain Valenzuela meanwhile had a fourth-place finish in the men's 10,000m race with a time of 31:50.44.
Casey Keeter and Tyler Stowell each collected points in the hammer toss on Saturday. Keeter finished seventh with a toss of 43.66m. Stowell finished eighth with a throw of 41.39m. Nolan Eubanks recorded a silver-medal finish in the shot put with a throw of 15.97m to finalize the men's finals on Saturday.
Texans qualifying for Sunday's running finals included Jamal Mays in the 100m dash (10.75), Jared McNeil in the 800m (1:57.23) and Garrett Thomas in the 110m hurdles (14.54 – fastest time).
Jordan Leslie had a great day on the women's side, collecting a second-place finish in the shot put (13.25m) and a third-place finish in the hammer throw (41.16m). Meredeth Persinger placed fifth in both the hammer throw (38.33m) and shot put (12.42m). Elizabeth Dominguez meanwhile placed fourth overall in the shot put with a toss of 12.83m.
Katherine Grillo finished seventh overall in the women's 3000m steeplechase to collect a few points for the TexAnns.
TexAnns qualifying for the finals on Sunday included Kandis Brooks in the 100m hurdles (14.06) and the 200m dash (22.26), along with Courtney Newsom (57.59) and Danitra Marshall (58.55) in the 400m dash.
The Texans currently sit tied for third in the standings with Eastern New Mexico after tallying 37 points on Saturday. Abilene Christian leads after day one with 78 points. Angelo State follows with 70 points. West Texas A&M sits in fifth with 32 accumulated points.
The TexAnns, currently in fourth, accumulated 30 points and are behind ASU with 85 points and ACU with 59 points. Texas A&M-Kingsville is just ahead of the TexAnns with 31 points, while WT follows behind Tarleton with 29 points.
More final field events are set to get underway on Sunday at noon, while the rest of the running event finals are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
