San Angelo - The Tarleton baseball team completed a sweep of the Rams with two more Saturday night in San Angelo, improving their record to 20-7 on the season.
Game 1 - Tarleton 11, ASU 1
The Texans jumped out of the gate early with eight runs in the first four innings, including two in the first and second innings each.
Zane Hensley got Tarleton on the board in the first inning with a two-run double to rightfield.
Andrew Kapple blasted a solo shot in the second and was followed by Junnior Dishmey's RBI single to left making it a 4-0 ball game.
Tim Rainey added the Texans' fifth run in the third inning, but the Rams answered with a run of their own in the bottom half.
That would be all the runs ASU would score though as Tarleton would go on to score six more times in the game, finishing the Rams off with an 11-1 score.
For the second straight game, the Texans recorded 14 hits, led by
Ethan Stuckly's 3-for-4 day.
Landon McCall,
Mark Jeffery, Rainey and Hensley all collected a pair of RBI's, with Kapple, Dishmey and Stuckly providing the other RBI's.
Starter
Ryan Salt (2-0) was phenomenal on the mound for Tarleton, only giving up one run on two hits through all seven innings.
Rick Reyna (3-2) suffered the loss for the Rams after allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings.
Game 2 - Tarleton 11, ASU 5
The second game of the doubleheader started the same way the Texans had ended the first game with Jeffery plating a run in the opening inning with a single to center.
ASU proved to be a formidable foe though, with a three-run bottom of the first, making it a 3-1 contest.
Tarleton got a run back in the top of the third on a wild pitch that allowed Dishmey to score, but the Rams added to their lead with another run in the bottom of that same inning.
The Texans gave up a run in the fourth and quickly found themselves down 5-2 heading into the latter stages of the game.
Tarleton's offense woke up again in the sixth and continued into the seventh with a pair of runs in both innings. Rainey and McCall each plated a run in the sixth inning, but it was Hensley's two-run home run in the seventh that really put the Texans in control of the game.
It wasn't until the top of the ninth that Tarleton pulled away and piled on the runs with six more, making it an 11-5 final score. Stuckly capped off the scoring with a two-run triple to deep right center.
The Texans finished with 13 hits, including two-hit games by McCall, Stuckly and Hensley. McCall also had three RBI's in the game, while Stuckly and Hensley both had two RBI's.
Nathan Lewis (4-1) came out of the bullpen to pick up the win and gave up just a single run on two hits through 4 2/3 innings of work. Closer
Ryan Turner earned his sixth save of the year with a perfect ninth, getting all three outs via strikeout.
Tarleton gave ASU's James Conlee (4-1) his first loss of the season, roughing up the reliever for nine runs on eight hits in his 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
The Texans improved to 20-7 on the year and 15-6 in the Lone Star Conference, while Angelo State fell to 17-15 overall and 11-10 in the LSC. Tarleton out-scored the Rams 40-12 in the three-game set.
