Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Peyton Adamson led the No. 21 Tarleton TexAnns past the Northeastern State Riverhawks 59-57 in a post-Thanksgiving Day battle in Wisdom Gym.
The junior guard from Rockwall scored 24 points in the effort and went 6-11 from downtown as Tarleton (2-1) ended Northeastern's (3-2) three-game winning streak.
This is the sixth win for Tarleton in the 16
th meeting between these two regional powers.
Tarleton built and maintained a double-figure first half lead, but Northeastern State opened the second half on a 14-2 run to tie the game for the first time at 38-38.
At 40-40, Adamson drained a deep 3-ball and
Kiara Wright dropped in a pair of free throws to put Tarleton up five with 12:46 left in the game.
Northeastern pulled within one point at 47-46, but with 8:49 on the clock, Tarleton scored eight unanswered to pull away 55-46 with 7:19 left. Adamson started and ended the run with 3-pointers with a Lowrance layup in between.
The Riverhawks pulled within one at 57-56 following a mid-range jumper from the paint with 46 seconds left. Northeastern immediately called a timeout, giving them just one left in the final 46 seconds.
On the ensuing possession, Adamson got to the free throw line with 14.97 left to play and last year's national free throw leader connected for both to put Tarleton up 59-56.
With 1.66 seconds left, a Tarleton foul on a 3-point shot put NSU at the line. The Riverhawk shooter missed the first before hitting the second, forcing a Tarleton timeout at 59-57.
The shooter sent the final shot off the side of the rim and into the arms of
Brianna Bledsoe as the final buzzer sounded.
Tarleton opened the game on fire from the floor, which led to the huge early lead.
Shanae Lowrance scored the first points of the game off an assist from Bledsoe. The Lowrance bucket was the first points of a quick 7-0 TexAnn run that was strengthened by a Adamson 3-ball and a
Cheyenne Berry jumper.
Northeastern State got on the board with a pair of free throws at 17:40 but the TexAnns answered by holding them scoreless over the next 5:10 while increasing their lead to 17-2.
After three more Lowrance points put Tarleton on top 20-4, the RIverhawks came to life on the floor with a 20-13 run to cut the Tarleton lead to single-digits at 33-24 with 1:46 left to play in the opening half.
Adamson and
Cheyenne Berry added a layup and a free throw, respectively, to send Tarleton into the break with a 36-24 lead.
Adamson led the team in scoring with 24, marking her sixth 20-point game in her Tarleton career and the second this season. Berry was also in double figures with 11.
Wright was two points shy of her third double-double of the season. She was held scoreless in the first half but finished the game with eight points and 15 rebounds.
The TexAnns shot 44 percent from the floor (19-43), 47 percent from 3-point land (7-15) and 74 percent from the free throw line (14-19) while holding NSU to 32 percent from the floor (17-53), 30 percent from 3-point land (7-23) and 76 percent from the free throw line (16-21).
Tarleton will hit the road for a three-game road trip, beginning with a 6 p.m. game at St. Mary's Wednesday in San Antonio.
