Tarleton splits with ACU Saturday in LSC baseball action

- Box Score - Game 1
- Box Score - Game 2

ABILENE – The Texan baseball team lost the first game of Saturday's doubleheader in a close 2-1 match-up, then took the nightcap 3-2 for a split on the day.

Game 1 – ACU 2, Tarleton 1

The Texans and Wildcats battled back and forth in the first game of the doubleheader, but a walk-off hit in the seventh and four Tarleton errors gave the hosts the victory.

ACU opened up the scoring in the fifth with a single run, before the Texans tied the game up in the sixth with a solo blast by Blake Silguero to left-center.

That would be the only run Tarleton would score in the game though as the Wildcats got the game-winning run in the seventh.

Pete Perez (6-3) went the distanced for the Texans and suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings.  The junior hurler also struck out seven batters while walking nobody in the contest.  Four errors hurt Perez's cause as he pitched a productive game.

Clint Cooper (7-2) got the win for ACU after pitching just one inning for the Wildcats.

Garrett Hardey finished the game with a 2-for-3 outing, while Silguero provided the lone RBI.

Game 2 – Tarleton 3, ACU 2

After a tough loss in game one, Tarleton rebounded for a 3-2 win in the second game of the day, riding a three-run seventh inning to victory.

The Texans trailed early after ACU scored solo runs in the third and sixth innings.

A quiet Tarleton offense finally came alive in the seventh, starting with Jonathan Schmitz's RBI fielder's choice.  Evan Robinson followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice bunt, tying the game up at 2-2.

Noah Ringenberger gave the Texans their first lead of the day with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Schmitz.  That would be all Tarleton would need to overcome an early deficit and take a 3-2 victory.

Matt Buckmaster (5-1) was lights out for the Texans after giving up just two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings, while striking out seven.  Britt Robertshaw picked up his fourth save of the season with 2/3 perfect innings.

Small finished the game 2-for-4, while Schmitz, Robinson, and Ringenberger provided the RBI's.

The series between the Texans (20-19, 11-12) and Wildcats (24-21, 11-12) will wrap-up Sunday with a nine-inning affair starting at 2 p.m. in Abilene.
