WACO – Junior distance runner Lindsey Hinton set her second school record while 11 others topped their own personal season marks for the Tarleton track and field team at the 2012 Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic at Baylor University Saturday.

Distance

In the long-distance running events, Hinton highlighted the day by breaking Linda Garcia's 10-year record of 4:41.44 in the 1500m run.

The junior from Denton finished the evening race in a time of 4:39.40 for an eighth place finish. Hinton was one of just two Lone Star Conference runners to finish in the top 10.

“That was one goal we set for the day and I'm very proud of her,” said Tarleton head coach Pat Ponder. “She executed the race plan perfectly today and it is very well deserved.”

In the 5000m run, Celeste Meyer and Ashley Husbands set personal records en route to finishing eighth and tenth in the race. Meyer completed the event in 17:59.71 while Husbands completed the event in 18:08.80.

“I knew they were ready for a breakout performance like this and they did it,” said Ponder. “It's exciting to see them reach their potential and set their personal bests.”

Miles Joslin and Tye Doty raced in the men's 5000m run to wrap up the day. Joslin (15:27.98) finished seventh while Doty (16:14.27) claimed 19th.

Earlier in the afternoon, Tarleton had six total athletes set season bests in the 1500m and 800m run.

Brian Cooper set a season-best 1:55.84 for a fifth place finish in the 800m run while Payton Shoush claimed third in the 800m with a season high time of 2:16.41.

In the morning running of the 1500m run, Tarleton had four TexAnns finish in the top 13 while Joslin took first in the men's morning race and three other Texans finished in the top 12.

Meyer (5:00.65) claimed eighth in the run with a season-best time while Hillari Raemsch (5:08.25) finished 11th and Lauren Finley (5:11.26) finished 13th in their quests for season highs. Kyndall Trnka just missed setting a season high with a 12th place finish and a time of 5:09.50.

In the men's race, Joslin's top mark of 4:02.18 in the 1500m run notched him a first place finish while Bryan Garcia (4:11.11), Doty (4:11.64) and Jacob Milles (4:31.37) finished eighth, tenth and 12th. Milles' time was a season best in just his second race this season.

Sprints & Hurdles

The Tarleton sprinters and hurdles had three season highs during their time at the Baylor meet, including Shelby Terry – who's season-best in the 100m hurdles nearly notched her a NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Terry ran the women's 100m hurdles in 14.90 which was a season high and good for a ninth place finish. The time was 0.5 seconds short of the NCAA qualifying time of 14.40.

“I'm very proud of the way Shelby – and others – competed tonight,” said Ponder. “She competed well and is finally starting to come around. If she competes this well at the LSC tournament, the rest of the conference will be in for a fight.”

Ashley Allen also competed in the 100m hurdles and finished 13th with a time of 15.15 while Cyler Matlock and Kyle Johnson ran in the 110m hurdles for the Texans and finished seventh and 11th, respectively, with times of 15.41 and 15.80.

Johnson was the only Tarleton hurdler to run in the 400m event and set a season high with a 58.34 time and a ninth place finish.

The Tarleton sprinters competed well with Diamond Wilson setting a season high in the 400m dash.

Wilson finished the event with a time of 59.39 while Claire Goodman (58.80) and Jenna Duncan (1:0.34) also competed and finished 18th and 27th, respectively.

Tarleton had three men compete in the 400m dash and finish in the top 35.

In the men's 100m and 200m, Phillip Hayes ran 10.98 and 22.02 for a 16th and 15th place finish respectively. Jamal Mays added an 11th place finish in the 100m with a time of 10.87.

Field

In the field events, Tarleton competed well while Nikki McNorton completed the high jump by topping the NCAA provisional qualifying mark yet again.

McNorton has met the NCAA provisional qualifications in every meet this season and Baylor was no different.

In the shot put, Leslie Jordan finished seventh with a throw of 43-3 while Elizabeth Dominguez (39-11.25) and Kallie Johanson (38-5) finished 12th and 15th, respectively. Johanson's throw was enough to claim first in her flight.

In the men's shot put, Hayden Eubanks and Kenny Odunaiya finished 15th and 16th while Eubanks also added a ninth place finish in discus with a toss of 156-10.

“We competed well today and I'm proud of everyone,” said Ponder. “We'll go hard next week and then we'll rest up and get ready for the LSC Championships. Right now, we're banged up with injuries and youth but I know everyone will step up to get the job done.”
