Smith qualifies for 400m hurdles finals at NCAA Championships

PUEBLO, Colo. – Jeff Smith has advanced to the finals in the 400m hurdles of the 2012 Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships and is now of the final nine 400m hurdlers in the nation.
 
“Goal No. 1 is accomplished,” said Tarleton head coach Pat Ponder. “Our goal was to make the finals and he did that. We will review his race and make the necessary adjustments before the finals.”
 
Smith finished third in his heat and seventh overall with a time of 52.03 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl Thursday evening.
 
The junior from Mineral Wells is an NCAA automatic qualifier after completing the Lone Star Conference Championships with a Tarleton school record time of 51.82.
 
Smith will run in the finals Saturday afternoon while fellow Tarleton teammate Nikki McNorton will high jump Saturday as well.
