Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) scored a career-high 22 points, while helping guide the Tarleton Texans (9-6, 3-5 LSC) to a 65-50 win over the West Texas A&M Buffs (11-5, 3-5 LSC) at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville on Saturday night. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Texans.
Guy went 7-for-13 from the field, he was 2-for-4 from the arc and 6-for7 from the charity stripe in 38 minutes. He dished out six assists and had three rebounds in the contest as well.
Up 12-7 with 11:57 left to play in the first half, WT's Kennon Washington hit a three-pointer to make it a 12-10 game in favor of the Texans. That would turn out to be the Buffs' final field goal of the first period as Tarleton outscored the visiting team 19-3 over the last 11-plus minutes.
The Texans opened the run with
De'Andre Upchurch's (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) counter trey at the other end of the court and ended with
Jakob Damstra (F, Fr, Dublin) tipping in an offensive board with 1:39 remaining in the period.His tip-in made it a 31-13 game as the Texans took an 18-point lead into the locker room.
Tarleton shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half, which included going 5-for-8 from the arc.
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) was 2-of-3 from downtown and Upchurch made both of his attempts in the half.
The Texan defense held WT to just four field goals in the half and a shooting percent of just 20.0 percent.
Both teams turned the ball over eight times, but the Texans outmanned the Buffs on the boards 19-9. Tarleton had a pair of second chance points and scored eight points off WT turnovers.
WT's Darnell Jackson scored a bucket right out of the gate for the Buffs to open the second half and then went on a 10-2 run before Tarleton called a timeout with 14:27 remaining in the game. The Buffs then outscored the Texans 16-11 over the next seven-plus minutes until Guy poured in a finger-roll with 6:55 left to play to make it a 46-39 game, still in favor of the Texans.
Tarleton would score the next two baskets following Guy's floater to take a 52-39 lead before WT got back onto the board with a three-pointer from Tez Dumars at the 1:49 mark. His shot from downtown made it a 10-point game in favor of the Texans, but
Damion Clemons (F, So, Dallas) immediately made it a 54-42 game with his lay-up at the other end.
Tarleton then closed out the remainder of the game with a 9-6 run to secure the 65-50 win and snap the four-game losing streak.
Upchurch racked up 14 points for the Texans on the night as well. He made three baskets from downtown and had a steal in the game.
Clemons led the team with six boards and tallied a pair of blocks as well.
The Buffs were led by Donald Sims' 10 points, while Dumars and Nate Drayton led the team with four rebounds.
WT shot just 35.6 percent from the field while Tarleton shot 52.6 percent, including a 46.2 percent effort from the arc.
For the first time in the past four games, Tarleton out-rebounded its opponent 29-22. The Texans pulled down 10 offensive boards on the evening as well.
Tarleton will have a full seven days before returning to action next Saturday, Jan. 26 against A&M-Commerce. Tip-off between the Texans and Lions is set for 4 p.m. inside TAMUC Fieldhouse.
