Box Score STEPHENVILLE – On a rough-shooting night in Wisdom Gym, Tarleton fell for the second time in its last three games following a 70-60 Lone Star Conference loss to West Texas A&M.
Tarleton (11-4, 7-2) shot just 39 percent from the floor and 18 percent from beyond the arc while West Texas (9-9, 5-4) was 52 percent from the floor and 44 percent from downtown.
This is the first home loss for Tarleton this season – bringing their 2012-13 record inside Wisdom Gym to 7-1 – and snapping an 18-game home winning streak.
It is the first home loss since falling 87-84 to Lubbock Christian Nov, 22, 2011 and the first home conference loss since falling 82-78 to West Texas A&M Feb. 13, 2010.
Leading by four out of the break, West Texas A&M opened up the second half on a 12-6 run to push its lead to a game-high 10 points at 46-36 over the opening 4:41 of the second half.
Tarleton immediately brought the deficit back to just two points after an 8-0 run – on five points from
Brianna Bledsoe and a 3-ball from
Peyton Adamson – to make it 46-44. The run was capped off with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Bledsoe following an offensive rebound.
The TexAnns couldn't capitalize, however, committing two turnovers and missing two shots over their next four possessions while WT tacked on seven points to extend the lead back to nine at 53-44 with 9:32 left.
Over the rest of the game, the Lady Buffs pushed their lead to as many as 13 and never led by less than nine the rest of the way.
Tarleton got the scoring started when
Morgan Ashmore cut to the basket for a quick layup, but West Texas A&M answered right back with a 16-5 run to take an early nine-point lead with 12:10 left in the opening half.
The Lady Buffs maintained at least a five-point lead over the next 3:17 but a tip-in from Tarleton's
Erin Sims at 8:53 was the start of a 6-0 Tarleton push to cut the WT lead to just one at 20-19 with 7:34 left to play.
After WT immediately answered to push its lead back to five,
Kiara Wright scored five unanswered points for the TexAnns to tie the score for the first time since 5-5 at 18:33. The Lady Buffs went on to end the first half on an 8-4 run to enter halftime with a 34-30 lead.
Already shorthanded due to injuries, Tarleton battled foul trouble all night for Wright, Bledsoe and Sims. Wright eventually would foul of the game while Bledsoe finished with four and Sims three – all of which came in the first half.
Wright led the team with 16 points on 6-14 shooting and 4-7 shooting from the charity stripe while Bledsoe was the only other TexAnn in double-figures with 14 points.
Wright also led the team with seven rebounds while Bledsoe and
Cheyenne Berry each added six. With seven rebounds, Wright now has 184 boards this season and 625 for her career, passing Ronda Edwards (621) for ninth place on the all-time TexAnn rebounding list.
She is now nine rebounds shy of passing JoAnne Jones for eighth place all-time and becoming Tarleton's all-time NCAA rebounder. The top seven TexAnns on the all-time list competed in the NAIA.
The TexAnns remain at home this week with a Wednesday night single game against Texas Woman's at 6 p.m. The TexAnns will be signing autographed team pictures after the game.
