Texan Football Announces 2014 Signing Class

- 2014 National Signing Day Release – Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State head football coach Cary Fowler has announced that 40 high school players have signed National Letters-of-Intent to play football for the Texans beginning in the fall of 2014.

In addition to the 40 NLI signees, the Texans have signed three junior college players that enrolled to Tarleton State University this semester that will be eligible to participate in spring drills later in the spring semester.

"Our coaches did a great job and we are excited about the competition that we are bringing to Tarleton State," said Fowler. "If we want to be the best, we have to recruit the best and I feel that we have done that this recruiting season."

The Texans added 20 players that can play on the offensive side of the ball, while 19 of the signees play defense. Tarleton also added a pair of athletes and one special teams player.

The Texans are coming off a 7-3 season where they went 5-1 in the Lone Star Conference and earned the school's third conference title. It was Tarleton's first conference title since the 2009 season.

SEUN ABODERIN • QB • Fort Bend Austin High School • 6'1"/210
Seun comes to the Texans from Fort Bend Austin High School out of Sugarland, TX where he played under Head Coach Dan Schreiber. He offers a lot for the Texans with his arm strength, athleticism, and leadership ability. While being the starting quarterback in his career, Seun lead Fort Bend Austin to the best finish in school history. Throughout his signal calling as a junior and senior, Seun passed for over 2,900yds. We are very excited about the versatility and leadership Seun will bring to this program. In 2013 he was a 2nd Team 23-5A All-District QB.
KEVIN BAKER • DB • Kimball High School • 6'3''/180                  
Kevin Baker comes to the Texans from Kimball High School in Dallas, TX where he played under Head Coach Carlton Nelson. Baker was a multisport standout athlete at Kimball High playing both football and basketball. To go along with his speed and athleticism Kevin has a long frame standing at 6'3''. This gives him the ability to cover ground in the secondary as well as covering up throwing windows for opposing quarterbacks. Baker has the potential to have a very bright future with the Texans.

Devontay Bell will join the Texans as an athlete. Bell comes to the Texans from Corsicana High School where he served his team as a dual threat quarterback. Bell has the ability to make game changing plays on any down. In a single game Bell lead Corsicana to a victory with 385 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns. His athleticism gives the Texans a good chance for something special when the ball is in his hands.

Steven Bergmark will join the Texans from Southlake Carroll where he played linebacker under Head Coach Hal Wasson. He was rated a 2-Star prospect by 247Sports. Bergmark recorded 138 solo tackles and 125 assisted tackles for a career total of 263 tackle. He also has 4.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 5 forced fumbles. Bergmark collected honors such as 4-5A Defensive MVP, and 1st Team All- Region.
JAKE BLOMSTROM • LB  • KATY HIGH SCHOOL • 6'2"/ 220
Jake will join the Texan family from Katy High School in Katy, TX where he played under Head Coach Gary Joseph. Jake is big body at the MLB position and was one of the top LB prospects in the state of Texas. He was a rated a 3-Star prospect by Rivals as well as a 2-Star prospect by 247Sports and Scout.com. During his Sr. Season Jake recorded 121 Tackles, 21 TFL's and 5 Sacks. He was also voted 19-5A Unanimous 1st Team LB as well as the 19-5A MVP and was 1st Team LB for the Greater Houston Area. He was also a finalist for the Houston Touchdown Club's Defensive Player of the Year.
MALIK BROWN  • WR/FS • Huntsville High School • 6'0"/183
Malik Brown was a standout athlete for the Huntsville Hornets; this past season he played WR, QB, DB under Head Coach Shane Martin. Malik will bring an extreme amount of athleticism and speed to the Texan Football program. During his Sr. Season he was a threat on both sides of the ball and has the ability to take over a game at any moment.  During his Junior year Malik had 1,475 yards passing and 322 yards rushing on Offense and added 10 Tackles, 3 INT and 2 Forced Fumbles on Defense. In 2013 he had 812 yards passing and 520 yards rushing on Offense and added 17 tackles, 3 INT and 1 Forced Fumble on Defense. Malik's awards include: 18-4A 1st Team All-District offense in 2012 as well as 1st Team All-District Utility Player in 2013.
NAJE BROWN • DE • WILMER HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL •                   6'4''/235
Naje Brown comes to the Texans from Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas, TX where he played under Head Coach Elzie Barnett. The versatile Brown played both sides of the ball for the Eagles playing tight end on offense and defensive end on defense. The big framed Brown will bring great size and athleticism to the Texan Defensive Line.

Corin joins the Texans from the University of Texas at El Paso. Corin is originally from Riverside, CA where he played his prep ball at Arlington High School under Head Coach Pat McCarthy. Corin will bring good size and athleticism to the Texan offensive line in 2014. Coming out of high school Corin was rated a 3-Star prospect by Rivals.

Along with Malik, Christain also played under Head Coach Shane Martin at Huntsville High School. Christain brings amazing speed and versatility to the Texan program. He is an extremely shifty and explosive athlete who can change the game any time the ball gets in his hands. Playing both sides of the ball for the Hornets, Christain was a true impact player who will bring his elusiveness and power to the Texans. During his Sr. season 18 catches for 228 yards and 2 TD's, he also had 750 yards rushing on Offense and on Defense he had 16 Tackles and 3 INT's. Christain is also a threat in the kicking game having 11 KOR's for 134 yards.  
DENNIS CHAVEZ • LB • San Antonio East Central High School • 6'0"205
Dennis brings a defensive mentality that every coach wants on his team. Dennis joins the Texans from East Central High School in San Antonio, TX where he played under Head Coach Clint Hartman. He is one of the most downhill, hard-nosed players in the state. He plays the game with tremendous energy and passion. Dennis has the ability to change a games momentum any time he is around the ball. He has a knack for making big plays and constantly being in the right place at the right time. Not only is Dennis a great LB but he is a true football player as he can play on every Special Teams Unit. During his Sr. Campaign Dennis recorded 103 Tackles, 12 TFL's, 8 Sacks, and 2 INT's.  Dennis' awards include: Unanimous 28-5A All-District LB (2012) and 28-5A Defensive Most Valuable Player (2013)
MALIK CLEMONS • LB • SHOEMAKER HIGH SCHOOL • 6'0"/220
Malik Clemons comes to the Texans from Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas where he played under Head Coach Channon Hall. In his senior season Clemons accounted for 88 solo tackles and 31 assisted for a total of 119 tackles. He also accounted for 17 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 1 INT returned 62 yards for a touchdown and 1 forced fumble. Clemons also had 3 passes defended, 2 fumble recoveries and 5 quarterback hurries. Clemons is a very talented linebacker who plays downhill. He was recognized by Dave Campbell's Magazine has a Top 100 Prospect in the state of Texas.  Clemons received 1st Team 8-5A All-District, 1st Team All-Area and as a Sophomore Clemons was named 12-5A Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
DALTON CLUBB • DB • WEATHERFORD HIGH SCHOOL • 6'2"/175                 
Dalton Clubb comes to the Texans from Weatherford High School in Weatherford, Texas where he played under Head Coach Weldon Nelms. Dalton is a rangy athlete that has tremendous upside. With 4.5 speed and a 6'2 frame, he can cover a lot ground on the back end. As a senior Clubb tallied 74 tackles, three forced fumbles and 12 pass breakups. He is a hardnosed kid that will bring a lot of toughness and physical play to the Texan secondary. Clubb finished his senior campaign with First team all Parker County honors along with 3-5A Academic all district.

Rashaan Donelson joins the Texans from Liberty-Eylau High School in Texarkana where he played under Head Coach Brian Brown. Rashaan Donelson was a highly recruited Dual threat quarterback who can hurt you through the air or on the ground. His senior season he completed 66 of 137 passes for 1,114 yards, 10 touchdowns, he ran for 216 yards and a touchdown on 49 carries, before he suffered a season ending injury. He was rated a 2-Star prospect by Rivals and received offers from Navy, and Alabama A&M. Donelson achieved All-District, and Offensive Player of the Year honors.
JAMARQUIS DURST • WR • CONROE OAK RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL • 6'2"/180
Jamarquis Durst comes to the Texans from Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas where he played under Head Coach Dereck Rush. Jamarquis is a strong wide out with great balance and vision. He is a guy who will go up get the ball in traffic and knows what to do with the ball in his hands. Jamarquis has great hands and is a guy that can take the top off a defense. We are excited about getting Jamarquis involved in our offense because of the big play potential he possess. Durst finished his senior campaign with 25 catches for 357 yards and two touchdowns, earning him post season honors for the second consecutive year as a first team all-district receiver.
GARRETT GASKAMP • QB/DB • KILLEEN HIGH SCHOOL • 5'11"/185
Garret Gaskamp comes to the Texans from Killeen High School in Killeen, Texas where he played under Head Coach Sam Jones. Garrett is a multi-sport athlete with great quickness and agility. He is truly a student of the game coming from a coaching family; his dad David Gaskamp is the OC at Killeen High. As a quarterback, Gaskamp was a three year starter for the Kangaroos. Earning Newcomer of the year honors in 2011, and following up with all-district honors his junior and senior year. As a Senior Garrett carried the ball 52 times for 277 yards and 5 TD's and was 138/266 passing attempts for 1,985 yards and 12 TD's. His mobility and athleticism will give him an opportunity to make the transition to the defensive side of the ball.

Chris Gibbens joins the Texans from El Paso Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas where he played under Head Coach Daren Walker. Gibbens has a big frame and possesses great potential to become a dominant player for the Texans. He will bring length and athleticism to the Texan offensive line. His length will be a great advantage to the Texans especially in pass protection and he is athletic enough to move his feet and cover up defensive lineman and protect the quarterback. Gibbens received All-District honors as well as being named to the Greater El Paso Football Showcase All Star Team.

Clayton joins the Texan Family from Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, TX where he played under Head Coach Dereck Rush. Clayton will bring a great competitive personality to the Texans. In his senior season Clayton accounted for 38 tackles. He also accounted for 8 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks. Clayton also had 3 caused fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and 4 quarterback hurries. Clayton received 1st team All-District and 1st team All-County as a senior. He also was voted team defensive MVP for the 2013 season.

Terrance Gross will join the Texans from Ingleside High School in Ingleside, TX where he played under Head Coach Graig Hesseltine.  Terrance is an explosive receiver that can stretch the field vertically. Gross is rated a 3 star recruit by 247sports . Gross received 1st Team All District receiver. Gross caught 46 receptions for 804, averaging 17.5 yards per catch, and 12 touchdowns as a senior. The Texans will look to Terrance gross and his big play ability to help them in the fall. Terrance also shows his speed on the track as he was a state qualifier in the 400 when he ran a 48.2 last Spring. Terrance will also have the opportunity to run track at Tarleton State.

Jason Heim comes to the Texans from White Oak High School in White Oak, Texas where he played under Head Coach Gerry Stanford. Jason is a physical player who plays with a lot of attitude and emotion. He jumps off the film as a physical player who is able to control the line of scrimmage with his strength and power. Heim's aggressive mentality gives him the opportunity to be successful on the offensive or defensive line. Heim received 1st Team All District honors on both the offensive and defensive line in 2012. In 2013 Heim achieved Offensive Lineman of the Year, and Honorable Mention All- State Honors.
JAMAAL JOHNSON • TE  • DESOTO HIGH SCHOOL • 5'11''/ 200
Jamaal Johnson comes to the Texans from Desoto high school in Desoto, Texas where he played under Head Coach Claude Mathis. Johnson helped lead the Eagles to a 14-1 season in the fall of 2013. He recorded 41 receptions in his career at Desoto for a total of 672 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. Johnson is a big, athletic player who can be moved all around the field. The Texans will look to his versatility to aid them.  Johnson received 1st team All-district honors as well as being voted the receiver and tight-end of the year by his team.

Jeremy Johnson joins the Texans from Samuell high school in Dallas, Texas where he played under Head Coach Steve Pierce. Jeremy's brother Rufus Johnson also had a successful career with the Tarleton Texans from 2011-2012 launching him into his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints. Coaches see multiple similarities celebrated with older brother Rufus in Jeremy. Like Rufus, Jeremy is very athletic and has the potential to develop into as dominant player as his brother did. Unlike Rufus; Jeremy is a multi-sport athlete playing basketball as well as running track.

Derek Kiser comes to the Texans from Burnet High School in Burnet, Texas where he played under Head Coach Kurt Jones. Kiser completed a total of 252 out of 384 attempted passes for 3737 yards, 40 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions in his senior season which placed him 10th in passing yardage in the State of TX. His incredible efficiency makes him a very high profile recruit.  Kiser received honors as District 8-3A's MVP and a Built Ford Tough Player of the Week.
COLLINS KWABENA • RB • GEORGE RANCH HIGH SCHOOL • 5'10"/185
Collins Kwabena joins the Texans from George Ranch High School in Richmond, Texas where he played under Head Coach Ricky Tullos.  Kwabena is a big bodied back with great vision and speed, who can not only break multiple tackles, but run away from defenders as well. Kwabena's film is littered with broken tackles and defenders left behind as he runs for the end zone. The big back is an exciting acquisition for the Texans. During his Sr. Campaign Collins carried the ball 273 times for 1,952 yards and 34 TD's giving a 7 yard per carry average. Kwabena received 1st Team All-District Honors and was also a Regional Qualifier for the 4x100 in track.
MITCHELL LEONARD • WR • MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL • 6'0"/180
Mitchell Leonard joins the Texans from Marshall High School in Marshall, Texas where he played under Head Coach Clint Harper. The Marshall standout will jump right in with the playmaking Texan wide receiving corps. Leonard is a tenacious wide out who makes big things happen with the ball in his hands. He's a guy who will attack the ball in traffic and has speed to burn. Leonard finished his senior campaign with 33 receptions for 640 yards and five touchdowns, earning him all-district honors.

Reggie Long will join the Texans from Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas where he played under Head Coach Adam Cook. Reggie is a big athletic player who runs around the field with a purpose. Reggie's athleticism and football IQ will serve him well for the Texans and will give him the opportunity for an exciting career as a Texan linebacker. Reggie is rated a 2-Star LB by Rivals and 247Sports. Long was received Defensive MVP and 1st Team All-District linebacker.
DANIEL McCANTS JR. • RB • KILLEEN HIGH SCHOOL • 5'9"/ 170
Daniel joins the Texans from Killeen High School where played under Head Coach Sam Jones. Daniel had a great prep career at Killeen High. During his Senior season McCants had 211 carries for 1,620 yards and 18 TD's for an average of 7.6 yards per carry and also had 17 receptions for 313 yards for 3TD's for an average of 18 yards per catch. He is a two time 5A All-State Selection as well as 8-5A 1st Team All-District RB. In 2013 against Copperas Cove McCants carried the ball 41 times for 276 and 6 TD's to lead Killeen high to their first win against Copperas Cove in 15 years.

Eriq Mitchell joins the Texans from Lago Vista High School in Lago Vista, Texas where he played under Head Coach Alan Haire a former Tarleton Football Player. Eriq is an aggressive player with great speed and athleticism. Mitchell possesses the ability to rapidly change direction. His agility and physical attitude will combine to create an ideal linebacker for the Texans. Not only does Mitchell bring physical gifts to the field but he also plays with great effort. Mitchell is a 2 time All-State football player.

Taner Nichols comes to the Texans from Burleson Centennial High School in Burleson, Texas where he played under Head Coach Kyle Geller. Taner is a physical offensive lineman who plays with a nasty mentality that you like to see out of your offensive lineman. Taner can be seen trying to maul his opponents on film. Nichols drives his feet through contact and finishes his blocks. Nichols is an offensive lineman who plays through the whistle with a nasty mentality. Nichols also played basketball which has attributed to his footwork on the football field. The Texans are excited about the acquisition of Nichols.

Larry Osterman joins the Texans from Aubrey High School in Aubrey, Texas where he played under Head Coach Mike Segleski. The big framed Osterman is a powerful player on both the offensive and defensive line. Osterman was ranked 8th in his region for powerlifting and was able to transfer that strength onto the football field where he powered through opponents on both offense and defense. This will give oysterman the ability to be an effective player on either the offensive or defensive line for the Texans. Osterman received 2nd Team All-District honors on the Defensive line.

Tavaris Owens joins the Texans from Whitney High School in Whitney, Texas under head coach Kenneth Gilchrist. Owens accounted for 181 tackles at the linebacker position for Whitney. He also accounted for 17 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks,15 hurries, 2 interceptions, 1 for a touchdown, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries in his career at Whitney High. The Texans expect to foresee a big future in this defensive line prospect. Owens received 12-2A defensive MVP, and 2A All-State honorable mention honors, 1st Team Super Cen-Tex. Owens was also a 3-year starter on the basketball team and state qualifier in the shot put.
NICK PRESTWOOD • ATH. • MERIDIAN HIGH SCHOOL • 6'3'' / 175
Nick comes to the Texans from Meridian High School in Meridian, TX where he played under Head Coach Todd Doughty. Nick not only brings speed and athleticism to the Texans, but with his size, will be a big target on the offensive side of the ball. Nick was a standout athlete down the road at Meridian High School. Being a multisport athlete playing basketball, baseball, football, and track. This past summer Nick was Combine King at the De Soto Combine. Nick first made an impression on the Texan Football staff when he attended there summer camp. Nick's awards include: 1st team All-District Defensive Back (2012)-1st Team All-District Wide Receiver , 1st Team All-District Defensive Back, and 1st Team All-District Punter (2013).

Ron Reid comes to the Texans from Centennial High School from Burleson, TX where he played under Head Coach Kyle Geller. In competing in the National Kicking Championship, he finished ranking as the number 8 kicker in the nation and number 6 punter in the nation as well. He has an average kickoff distance of 60 yards while kicking the football out of the end zone over 80% of the time. Ron's awards include: 1st Team All District Kicker (2013)
DEVIN ROBERSON • WR/P • BIG SPRING HIGH SCHOOL     • 6'0'' / 175
Devin Roberson comes to the Texans from Big Spring, Texas where he played under Head Coach Phillip Ritchey. In 2013 he helped lead his school to a 9-4 season. Roberson caught 119 receptions for a total of 1,923 yards total of receiving and 10 receiving touchdowns in his career at Big Spring High School. Roberson also punts the ball. In his career at Big Spring; Roberson punted the ball a total of 98 times for 3,897 yards. During his Sr. year he had 30 punts for 1,180 yards giving him an average 40 yards per punt.  Roberson was named District Utility Player of the year, 2-time 1st team All- District (P/R/S) and was a member of the U.S. Air Force All-American Team.
JEREMY SANCHEZ • ATH/DE • SAN ANTONIO BURBANK HIGH SCHOOL • 6'3"/195
Jeremy Sanchez will join the Texans from San Antonio Burbank High School in San Antonio, TX where he played under Head Coach Mark Perez. Sanchez served multiple roles for the bulldogs primarily at wide receiver and defensive end. The first thing that pops out about Jeremy Sanchez is his breakaway speed. At 6'3" Jeremy can give you both length and speed on the defensive line and at receiver as well. The Texans look forward to the addition of Jeremy's size and athleticism in the fall. Sanchez earned TNL MVP and All-District Offensive/Defensive and Utilities honors.
MICHAEL SAULTER (MID-TERM ENROLEE) • DB • SIERRA COMMUNITY COLLEGE • 6'0"/ 200
Michael joins the Texan family from Sierra Community College where he played under Head Coach Ben Noonan and Del Campo High School in Sacramento, CA where he played under Head Coach Mike Dimino. Coming out of Sierra CC Michael was rated a 2-Star DB by Rivals. During his Sophomore Season at Sierra Michael recorded 59 Tackles along with 2 INT and 4 Fumble Recoveries.
BARRY STRIBLING • DB • SULPHER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL • 6'0"/ 170
Barry Stribling joins the Texans from Sulpher Springs High school in Sulpher Springs, TX where he played under Head Coach Greg Owens. The defensive back accounted for 62 solo tackles and 19 assisted tackles for a total of 81 tackles. He also recorded 1 tackle for loss, 1 forced fumble and 2 interceptions. During the season Stribling's film showed that he was a physical presence at the CB Position.    In 2013 Stribling earned honors as the district 14-4A First Team All-District safety.
KELAN TAYLOR • DB • FORT BEND HIGHTOWER HIGH SCHOOL • 5'8"/175
Kelan Taylor will join the Texans from Fort Bend Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas where he played under Head Coach Padriac McGinnes. Taylor is an instinctive football player with a nose for the ball. He is a tenacious corner with great ball skills and at the Nike Sparq Camp posted a 40 inch vertical. This past season Kelan had 45 Tackles, 8 TFL's, 20 PBU's and 3 INT's. 
DOMINICK THOMPSON  • LB • TEMPLE HIGH SCHOOL • 5'11"/225
Dominick Thompson comes to the Texans from Temple High School in Temple, Texas where he played under Head Coach Mike Spradlin. As a senior for the Wildcats Thompson recorded 94 solo tackles and 27 assisted tackles. Thompson also had 22 tackles for loss and 5 sacks his senior season along with 3 forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. During his career Thompson received was a 2 time All- State linebacker and in 2013he was 2nd team 8-5A linebacker. Thompson was also a 1st LB on the American Family Insurance all USA Texas Football Team
DALTON VONDRA (MID-TERM ENROLEE) • TE • KENNEDALE H.S./AIR FORCE PREP • 6'5"/ 250
Dalton joins the Texans this Spring after spending a semester at Air Force Prep. Dalton was a highly recruited TE out of Kennedale where he played under Head Coach Richard Barrett. Dalton will be a big target for the Texan QB's from the TE position. Coming out of high school he was rated a 2-Star Prospect by Rivals and a 3-Star prospect by 247Sports.
KOSTIN WALLACE • DT • WHITEHOUSE HIGH SCHOOL • 5'11"/310
Kostin Wallace will join the Texans from Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas where he played under Head Coach Adam Cook. In his career as a Wildcat, Wallace recorded 53 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3 sacks and 21 quarterback hurries at the defensive tackle position. Wallace's size will give him an advantage as a collegiate level defensive tackle. Wallace received 1st Team All-District honors and was selected to the FCA Heart of a Champion Bowl.

Whatley comes to the Texans from Aledo High School in Aledo, TX where he played under Head Coach Tim Buchanan. He is a big, strong, physical player that epitomizes the modern day slot WR.  John has tremendous upside and we will look for him to be a key component to our offense for many seasons to come. Whatley rounded out his senior season helping lead the Bearkats to a 4A state championship, garnering first team all-district and first team all-county honors after hauling in 33 catches for 568 yards and 8 touchdowns.
CEDRIC WILLIAMS • TE • CONVERSE JUDSON HIGH SCHOOL • 210
We are excited to have Cedric join the Texan family from Judson High School in Converse, TX where he played under Head Coach Mike Smith. Cedric has the ability to play multiple positions on the offensive side of the ball with his size and athelticism. Cedric has great hands and isn't afraid to go up and get the ball. Williams finished out his senior season pulling in 43 catches for 695 yards scoring 4 touchdowns on his way to first team all-district honors.

Matt Williams joins the Texans from Lubbock Cooper high school in Lubbock, Texas. He served as a 2 year starter on the defensive line under head coach Max Kattwinkel. Williams' big frame will give the Texans length and size on the defensive or offensive line. Despite his big frame Matt Williams jumped off of the film with his mobility and quickness off the ball. Williams is not even close to reaching his potential having only played football for two seasons. In 2013 he received 1st team DT for district 2-3A.
