TexAnns Open in Third at NCAA Division II Championships

CONOVER, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Tarleton State TexAnn golf team carded a +16, 300, on Wednesday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships and sit just six shots off the lead with 54 holes of golf remaining at the 5,928-yard, par 71 Rock Barn Golf & Spa Course in Conover, N.C.
 
Lynn opened the tournament with a +10, 294, and lead the tournament after the first day of play, three strokes ahead of Rollins who shot a +13, 297, on Wednesday.
 
The TexAnns are one shot ahead of Central Oklahoma (+17, 301) and five shots ahead of Barry (+21, 305), who both sit in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
 
Findlay (+25, 309), Indianapolis (+26, 310), Arkansas Tech (+27, 311), St. Edward's (+27, 311), Grand Valley State (+31, 315), Dallas Baptist (+35, 319) and Southwestern Oklahoma (+43, 327) round out the remaining teams in the field.
 
"I thought we played well today despite some tough pin placements," Tarleton head women's golf coach Jerry Doyle said. "Maraea [Durie] double bogeyed the last hole and still managed to shoot 77 on the day and her being our No. 5 golfer, that really helped us a ton. Sharon [Lau] and Jessica [Pickwick] played great today and I know that Isabel [Jimenez-Perea] will bounce back tomorrow."
 
Leading the way for the TexAnns were seniors Sharon Lau and Jessica Pickwick, who both carded a +2, 73, and are tied for ninth overall and the individual leaderboard. Both players are just three strokes off the pace of first-round leader, Tina Yang of California Baptist, who fired a -1, 70, on Wednesday.
 
Lau tallied a birdie and three bogey's on the round, while Pickwick carded just two bogey's.
 
Beatriz Prados and Maraea Durie are both tied in 29th place after scoring +6, 77, on Wednesday. Prados had one birdie and seven bogeys, while Durie recorded a team-high two birdies to go along with four bogeys and two doubles.
 
Jimenez-Perea shot an +8, 79, on Wednesday to round out Tarleton's scoring in the first round. The sophomore did score a pair of birdies on the round and had five bogeys to go along with two doubles as well.

Tarleton will begin teeing off in the second round on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (CDT), off hole No. 1 along with Central Oklahoma and Lynn.
