The quartet of Jeff Smith, Spivey Thomas, Pat Jones and Tomas Green set the Tarleton record in the 4x400-meter relay in 1991 with a time of 3:10.12. That broke their own previous record of 3:10.24 set in 1990. On top of their all-time mark, seniors Smith (7x), Jones (8x) and Green (6x) earned NAIA All-American honors multiple times and won conference all four years. Thomas, who was just a sophomore in 1991, was named All-American five times for his achievements. Together, the four Texan runners won event after event from 1990-1991, including a pair of TIAA Championships. The three elder runners also helped the Tarleton men’s team win the overall conference championship in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991, as all they competed in multiple events. The team was coached by current Tarleton Hall of Famer Carl Pleasant. With their record still standing today, Smith, Thomas, Jones and Green will forever be a part of Tarleton track and field history.
