Team captain as a sophomore, Love was first in the low hurdles in the national meet.  In another meet that year, he finished first in low hurdles, third in high hurdles, second in 100-yard dash and anchored the second place 440 relay.  In 1963, he won the 220 at the North Texas State Relays and the Arlington State meet.  At one time, Love held a Tarleton record in the 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash and the 220 low hurdles.
