Box Score CANYON – The TexAnns fell in the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinals 9-1 in five innings to Texas Woman's on Friday afternoon at West Texas A&M's Schaeffer Park.
Tarleton, ranked No. 3 in the tournament, was coming off a thrilling 2-1 walk-off win over No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce in the quarterfinals earlier in the day.
The TexAnns scored their lone run in the first inning when first three batters –
Melody Mayse,
Savannah Stech and
Katelyn Conlee – all reached on singles.
Erika Menchaca's sacrifice fly to left field drove home Stech for an early 1-0 lead for Tarleton in the first.
Texas Woman's, the No. 2-ranked team in the Lone Star Conference, received a bye in the first round.
The Pioneers managed 12 hits including a four-run inning in the second and fifth innings to pull away from the TexAnns.
Haley Freyman (20-12) started her second straight game in the circle for Tarleton and threw four innings while allowing six runs (four earned) before being replaced by
Brenna Hennan for the final inning.
Offensively, the TexAnns had eight hits in the game but left eight runners on base.
Mayse and Stech paced the TexAnn lineup with 2-for-3 performances.
Nyka Wood,
Mikayla Stogsdill and
Alyssa Ringhausen also had singles for Tarleton.
Tarleton (30-20) is ranked No. 8 in the South Central Regional poll and their regional tournament hopes remain alive with the quarterfinal win over No. 9-ranked A&M-Commerce.
The NCAA South Central regional tournament will consist of the tournament champions of the Lone Star, Rocky Mountain Athletic and Heartland conferences as well as five at-large teams. The top two seeds in the region will be the tournament host for 16 different, four-team regional tournaments that will lead to a Super Regional Tournament before the National Championship finals.
