STEPHENVILLE - Tarleton's Zach Shew cleared a high jump of 1.99 meters Friday to score 10 points for the Texans as he won the event on the first of two days of Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championship action.
The Texans, who are hosting the LSC meet, had several strong performances on Friday.
Tarleton is in fifth place after the first day of competition with 20 points. Angelo State leads the meet with 68 points, and they are followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (61.5), Abilene Christian (30), Texas A&M-Commerce (28.5), Tarleton and Eastern New Mexico (9).
Duane Emery qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash, turning in a time of 10.74 on Friday.
David Doyle qualified for the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.22 while
Justin Hobbs (52.90) and Josh Keyes (53.60) both qualified for the 400-meter hurdles.
Shaunte Lovings heads into the 110-meter hurdle finals Saturday with the top time from Friday after crossing the finish line in 14.26 seconds.
Mik Smith (37:02.63) and Bryan Ruiz (37:21.20) finished the 10,000-meter run for the Texans, which was won by Abilene Christian's Serge Gasore with a time of 31:54.48.
Kevin Emmert finished fourth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:04.25 while teammate Josh Gaston had a time of 11:09.18 to finish eighth. The event was won by Angelo State's Dustin Hafernick (9:32.38).
On the women's side, the TexAnns are tied for fourth with Texas A&M-Commerce with 25 points apiece. Abilene Christian leads after day one with 75 points while Angelo State (57) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (34) are second and third, consecutively. Eastern New Mexico has one point.
Chelsea Bradford qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash after turning in a premilinary time of 12.61 seconds.
Deba Egbon will run in the finals of the 200-meter dash (25.08) and the 400-meter dash (55.92) Saturday. Teammate Courtney Pleasant also qualified in both events, running 25.65 in the 200-meters and 57.71 in the 400-meters.
Marielle Gaston finished in fourth in the women's 10,000-meter run with a time of 47:16.00 while Stephanie Spicer was close on her heels, just .02 seconds behind her teammate. The event was won by Trina Cox of ACU with a time of 38:02.43.
Mallory Coker (16.03) and Caitlin Warren (16.07) both qualified for the 100-meter hurdles while Coker (1:10.86) and Amanda Epps (1:11.95) will run in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which was won by ACU's Ohla Kryv'yak with a time of 11:02.25, Tarleton's Krista Morris finished third with a time of 11:32.18.
Cassidy Porter finished second in the women's high jump, clearing 11.59 meters.
Carey Kirksey jumped 5.36 meters to finish fourth in the long jump.
The second day of the LSC Track and Field Championships is set to begin at noon Saturday with field events. The running events will begin at 5 p.m.
