Tarleton State University Athletics

Name, Image, Likeness

Name, Image, Likeness at Tarleton

Effective July 1, 2021, student-athletes can profit off their own name, image, and likeness—

  • By law, student-athletes are REQUIRED to report all contracts in which they intend to enter.

  • All student-athletes are REQUIRED to undergo a five-hour financial literacy and life skills workshop prior to their 1st and 3rd year at Tarleton State. Topics will include financial aid, debt management, time management, budgeting, and academic resources available to student-athletes, amongst others.

  • Compliance MUST approve all contracts before you sign them. To make this process as easy for you as possible, Tarleton Athletics has created a workflow in ARMS ("Name, Image and Likeness Approval"). To request approval, here is what you do: (1) Log into ARMS; (2) Click "Launch Workflow;" (3)  Complete the workflow (NOTE: you will be required to upload a copy of your desired contract).

What is permissible in the new NIL legislation

  • Student-athletes MAY make factual statements (example: "I am a member of Tarleton's Baseball team.") while promoting or profiting from your personal brand.

  • Student-athletes MAY earn money by signing autographs.

  • Student-athletes MAY enter into agreements with boosters, provided the activity is in accordance with Texas State Laws, is not an impermissible inducement, and does not constitute “pay-for-play”.

What is NOT permissible in the new NIL legislation

  • Student-athletes MAY NOT enter into agreements which conflict with Tarleton Athletics' existing sponsorships (example: Because Tarleton is a Nike school, you cannot enter into a personal agreement with Adidas, Under Armour, etc.)

  • Student-athletes MAY NOT enter into agreements to endorse alcohol, tobacco products or e-cigarettes, steroids, sports betting, casino gambling, firearms that you cannot legally purchase, or sexually-oriented businesses.

  • Student-athletes MAY NOT enter into agreement terms for longer than their remaining eligibility.

  • Student-athletes MAY NOT use Tarleton property (example: your football helmet) while promoting or profiting from your personal brand.

  • Tarleton Athletics MAY NOT provide or arrange NIL contracts for you.
