STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- Preparations for the 2002-03 basketball season will get underway officially Monday night when Tarleton State hosts the ninth annual Midnight Madness festivities at Wisdom Gym.
Â
Doors will open at 11:30 p.m. for the hour-long event that will include plenty of giveaways, several contests for fans and player introductions for both the Texan and TexAnn basketball squads. Both teams will conduct brief 15-minute practices, and the Tarleton cheerleaders and Texan Stars will perform.
Â
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive free T-shirts, while the next 100 people through the doors will get a set of purple or white basketball beads and the next 100 will take home a set of newly designed Tarleton banger noisemakers.
Â
Tarleton students also can participate in a halfcourt shootout for free tuition and fees for the Spring 2003 semester. One male and one female student will be selected, with each getting a shot at the grand prize.
Â
There also will be other contests and prizes that are available to the general public.
Â
Midnight Madness will be broadcast live on KCUB 98.3 FM, with Sports Doctor Ron Newsome calling the action. An online version of the broadcast can be accessed at TarletonSports.com.
Â
Tarleton's men open the 2002-03 season in just three weeks as the defending Lone Star Conference South Division champion Texans visit NCAA Division I powerhouse Texas. Tarleton will challenge the Longhorns Monday, Nov. 4, in a season-opening exhibition contest at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
Â
The men's team has back six lettermen and three starters from last year's 25-8 team, and the Texans will be led by senior forward Danny Jones, who averaged 15.1 points and 12.6 rebounds per game last season to earn consensus All-America acclaim.
Â
Veteran head coach
Lonn Reisman has added six junior college transfers and a pair of high school standouts.
Â
Tarleton's women, who open the season Nov. 6 with an exhibition against the All-Army team, will return four letterwinners and just one starter. Fourth-yearhead coach Claude Cummings has added nine transfers and five true freshmen.
Â
After Monday's Midnight Madness festivities, both teams will begin their daily practice routine on Tuesday.
