RICHARDSON - Tarleton State's Ray Gates has been honored as the Lone Star Conference North Division Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Saturday's defeat.
Gates, a 6-3, 250-pound senior from Shiner, had eight tackles, including five solo tackles and a half tackle for a loss. He also had four pass breakups and an interception. His interception came with just 4:55 remaining in the contest, which was tied. Gates returned the interception 49 yards to the East Central five-yardline to give the Texans the opportunity to score and take the lead.
Gates shared the honor with Southeastern Oklahoma State's Lennell Lawrence. Lawrence, a 5-11, 210-pound senior from Oklahoma City, Okla., led a strong defensive showing by the Savages who allowed Abilene Christian just 127 yards of total offense on Saturday, including just 66 after the break. Lawrence had five tackles, including three unassisted efforts and one that went for a loss in yardage, while also getting a fumble recovery and an interception. He returned the interception 49 yards and the fumble 10 yards.
Gates is the third Tarleton State player to receive Player of the Week honors this season. Derrick Ross was named the North Division Offensive Player of the Week after the first game of the season, while Steve Williams was awarded the honor for his efforts on defense in game three.
The Texans return to action Thursday, Oct. 7 at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
