STEPHENVILLE ? A dismal shooting performance and going six-of-31 from the three-point arc doomed the Tarleton TexAnns on Thursday in a 69-40 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma in Stephenville.
It was just the second loss at home for the TexAnns who fell to 17-9 overall, 7-4 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.
Southwestern Oklahoma (16-11, 7-5) moved into third as the TexAnns fell out of a tie for first in the North thanks to a win by Northeastern State. The Lady Bulldogs scored 36 points in the paint, compared to Tarleton's 14.
Julie Dawson got the scoring going with a jumper from the top of the key with 18:26 left in the half. Ashton Jenkins was fouled at 17:49 and hit the backend of a two-shot foul to cut the lead to 2-1. Grace Ann Jones hit a jumper just 15 seconds later. Paige Adams nailed a three from the top of the key at 15:19 to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead by six, 7-1. Casey Davies then hit a three at 14:57 to cut the lead to three. Amanda Franklin then hit a three at 13:49 to tie the game at seven.
Dawson hit a layup at 12:43 and was fouled by ArcTrena Stills. Dawson converted the three-point play to put SWOSU up 10-7. Stills then got a jumper on the other end to cut the lead to one, but Adams hit a jumper on the return trip. Stills then got a putback at 11:25, but Dawson hit a layup at 11:10 to make it 14-11. Autumn Aneshansley hit a jumper at 10:25 to increase the lead to five before she hit the front end of a two-shot foul. She missed the second and the Lady Bulldogs led 17-11.
Franklin hit a jumper in the lane at 8:52 to cut the lead to four, but Dawson's layup increased the lead to 19-13. Adams hit the back end of a two-shot foul at 7:03 before she hit a jumper at 6:01 to make it 22-13. Adams then hit a three at 3:44 to increase the lead to 12. Tamisha McGinty hit two free throws at 2:25 to cut the lead to 10 (25-15), but a jumper by Dru Tomaszewski at 2:07 returned the Lady Bulldogs to a 12-point lead.
Franklin hit a layup with 24 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to 10 and Katie Crawford got a steal and a fastbreak layup to cut the lead to eight and send the teams into the locker room with Southwestern Oklahoma up 27-19.
Just 27 seconds into the second period, Jones nailed a three from the top of the key to increase the lead to 11, but McGinty got a putback on the opposite end to make it 30-21 SWOSU. Dawson then hit a three at 18:40 and a jumper at 17:38 to give the Lady Bulldogs a 35-21 advantage. Jones added a bucket, as did Aneshansley, and Tarleton trailed 39-21 with 16:32 left in the period. Franklin hit the backend of a two-shot foul to cut the lead to 17 before hitting a laypup at 15:10 after a nice pass by Isha Brown. However, Aneshansley a bucket to make it 41-24. Dawson hit a jumper at 13:01 to increase the lead to 19 (43-24), before Crawford has three for the TexAnns from the top of the key to cut the lead to 43-27. Kimberly Smith had a bucket for Tarleton at 10:34 to cut the lead to 14, but Jones had a layup on the return trip to make it 45-29.
Aneshansley hit a jumper at 8:15 and Dawson did so at 6:33 to put SWOSU up 20 (49-29). Adams added to the lead at 5:55 with a jumper before Smith cut the lead to 19 (51-32) with a three. Bethany Bentz had a jumper at 5:27 prior to a Kayla Watson three on the return trip down the floor to give the Lady Bulldogs their biggest lead thus far of 24 points (56-32). Michelle Martin hit a jumper at 4:34 to cut the lead to 22. Aneshansley hit a jumper at 3:59 to make it 58-34. A three by Kendal Reddell cut the lead to 21 at 3:14, but Watson had two free throws with 2:05 remaining to give the Lady Bulldogs a 60-37 lead.
Stefanie Jones hit a layup at 1:24 and Watson had a jumper with 48 ticks left to increase the lead to 27 (64-37). Reddell cut the lead to 24 with another three from the top of the key, but Niki Sloan hit an unbalanced jumper that banked off the glass with 21 seconds remaining. She then hit a three at the buzzer to end the game to prove it was just not the TexAnns night. SWOSU won the contest, 69-40.
Tarleton was led by Franklin with 10 points and Jenkins with six rebounds.
The TexAnns shot just .259 from the field, .194 from the arc and .400 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Dawson with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits was Adams (13) and Aneshansley (11).
SWOSU shot .492 from the field, .429 from the arc and .357 from the line.
Tarleton will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Cameron. Tipoff is scheduled in Lawton, Okla. for 2 p.m.
