LET ME
explain the origin of the column's title. For the past seven or eight weeks, I have prepared a weekly newsletter, Plowboy Postscripts, for the 30 surviving members of the 1956 Tarleton Plowboy football team. The Tarleton Alumni Office has mailed 45 newsletters each week to 1956 team members, managers and other special guests. Thus, the decision was made to name this column, Plowboy Postscripts 2.
The 1956 team produced one of the most successful won and loss records in the history of Tarleton football. The team recorded seven wins, one loss and one tie, which is the sixth best record in the history of Tarleton football. Four of the team members are in the Tarleton State University Sports Hall of fame ? Jerry Flemmons (deceased), Leon Blakeney of Maplewood, Minnesota, Theon Thetford of Lafayette, Louisiana and Clyde Noonkester of Brownwood. Blakeney, Thetford and Noonkester will be present for the Reunion.
THE TEAM
scored 262 points and only allowed the opposition to tally 119 points. The team's only loss came at the hands of the San Angelo College Rams.
The 1956 Plowboys were Tri-Champions of the Pioneer Conference, tied with San Angelo College and Arlington State College. The tri-champ situation came about with Tarleton beating Arlington, then Arlington downing San Angelo and finally San Angelo defeating Tarleton.
WHEN THE
dust had settled in the Pioneer Conference play, Tarleton and Arlington were serious contenders for the Junior Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, California. Through some unusual twist Arlington State got the bid after Tarleton State had thrashed ASC Rebels, 30-7 at Tarleton's Memorial Stadium.
One might say the 1956 Tarleton team was an "almost participant" in the Junior Rose Bowl game in December, 1956.
HEAD COACH
of the 1956 team was the late H.A. (Sandy) Sanford. All four of Sanford's children, their spouses and a number of grandchildren will be present for the Reunion.
Assistant Coach Loyd Lowe, his wife, Ann, their two children and three grandchildren will also be in attendance. Coach Lowe and his wife reside in Rowlett.
TWENTY-FIVE
of the 30 surviving players and two of the three student managers will be present for the gala occasion. Five members are deceased.
