How has the strength and conditioning program affected the football program?
I think it's been a big bonus. Coach Harper has brought not only the knowledge of what to do and how to do things right, but it has relieved some of the stress off of the coaching staff because we know we have someone over there that will take care of business and focus on the guys individually instead having a base workout. Being more individualized makes each guy better.
Have you seen the difference in the student-athletes?
I think this year compared to last year, the guys really understand what he wants them to do, and there is not as much time getting them to where he wanted to get them. They are coming on faster. Last year, we were stronger at the end of the season physically, and that is what you want. You want to be better at the end of the season running your plays, and that is the same way with your physical wellbeing, and we were at our peak performance at the end of the season.
With the guys staying this summer for voluntary workouts, how has that helped prepare for training camp?
Those guys that stayed for the voluntary workouts come in to camp in better shape and with an understanding of what kind of work ethic we expect during the season. Those are the guys that are still going through the drills full speed instead of having to take a break or use a slow step. They already have their legs underneath them so now they are just working on their mental stuff getting ready to play.
What has the summer workouts done for the team?
I think working out over the summer has helped their morale and has helped to make them better players. Coach Harper has been able to take each guy and develop their weaknesses. Those guys that stay here together have a little bond, even some of the freshmen that came and took classes this summer have gotten to know the older guys and all of them have developed a chemistry. They know they have already gone through one hard thing together, so now they have belief and understanding and knowledge that they can trust each other and make it through this camp together, and then the season.
