STEPHENVILLE ? Tarleton men's basketball head coach
Lonn Reisman has announced the first signing for the 2009-10 school year. Corin Henry, a 5-11, 170-pound point guard from Baltimore, Maryland has signed to play for Tarleton over the next two seasons.
Henry, who will transfer to Tarleton from Ranger College, brings a high intensity and strong feel for the game to the Texan basketball program.
“We have been recruiting Corin all season long, and we love what he will bring to our team next season,” Reisman said. “Corin is a tough point guard that has great speed and quickness who loves to defend, but he can also score in a lot of ways. He breaks pressure well, can create shots for himself and others and you have to respect his shot out to the three-point line.”
Reisman said the first time he watched the newest Texan play, he tried to take five charges.
“Corin plays with a drive and focus that I expect from all of my basketball players,” Reisman said. “That fact that he played for Coach Rodney McConnell, a former player of mine, makes it even more special because I know he has instilled the values already that we preach here at Tarleton State University.”
Last season at Ranger College, Henry averaged 14.4 points, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game while helping his team to a 20-10 record. He recorded 26 points on two separate occasions against Grayson Community College, 24 points and four assists against Southwest Christian Community College and 23 points at Temple College. One of Henry's best games may have been when he scored 21 points against second-ranked Indian Hills Junior College in December. He was a first team selection to the North Texas Junior College Athletic All-Conference Team.
“I am extremely happy for Corin to sign with Tarleton,” McConnell said. “I strongly feel that Tarleton is the right place for Corin to reach his full potential. Coach Reisman pushed me as a player to get my degree and excel on the basketball court, and I know that is exactly what he will do for Corin Henry.”
As a senior at New Town High School, Henry helped the team to a state semifinal finish and a 20-4 record while averaging 24.9 points a game. He was selected First Team All-MET and scored a season high 40 points against Chesapeake High School. He also was selected as the Fox 45 News player of the week in high school.
Henry is the son of Carol Henry of Randallstown, Md. He has a brother, Jamel, and a sister, Jamillah. The junior will major in communications at Tarleton.
