DENTON - The No. 20 Tarleton TexAnn tennis team will travel to Denton on Wednesday to play the University of North Texas in a non-conference dual match beginning at 3 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex on the UNT campus.
"I received a call from UNT head coach Lama the other day and I am thankful of the opportunity for our program to compete against UNT," Tarleton head tennis coach
Lance Drake said. "This match comes at a good time for us and will allow us to work on some specifics that we need to incorporate into our games. We are stressing basics this week plus adding a few wrinkles."
The TexAnns (3-2) are coming off a weekend in Arkadelphia, Ark. in which they went 1-1 in tennis action. Tarleton dropped its first match with Drury on Saturday, 7-2, before downing Ouachita Baptist, 8-2, later that evening.
The Mean Green (3-2) has not played in over a week, but is coming off an impressive 5-2 win over nationally ranked Texas Tech back on Feb. 6 in Denton.
"Coach Lama has moved the North Texas tennis program to a highly competitive force in the realm of college tennis," Drake said. "They are coming off one of their biggest dual match wins in program history convincingly defeating a top 75 program in Texas Tech. UNT invested in a major upgrade to their facilities, and coach Lama and his staff have recruited well to bring the program up to where it is today."
Drake feels that playing a program like UNT says a lot about how well Tarleton's tennis program is looked at and thought of.
"It says a lot about where our program has come and the caliber of student-athletes who have helped grow our program," Drake said. We continue to strive to become better and relish these types of matches. It will be a great challenge and serve us well in the weeks ahead."
