ARLINGTON – Junior All-American Casey Keeter took first-place honors in the men's shot put with a NCAA Division II provisional mark of 16.67 meters, while guiding the Tarleton Texan Track & Field team to a 10th-place finish at the 2010 UTA/Bobby Lane Invitational at Maverick Stadium in Arlington on Saturday.
"I thought men did very well this weekend," Tarleton head track & field coach Pat Ponder said. "We got to the chance to compete with both Angelo State and Abilene Christian and I still feel that we have a shot to win conference. It's not going to be an easy task, but I believe it is something this team is up for."
Keeter bettered his provisional mark of 16.30 meters that he set a few weeks ago in Stephenville and then had a 10th-place finish in the discus throw as well with a mark of 47.16 meters.
Another Junior All-American, Jared McNeil, finished second in the 1500m run with a time of 4:00.30, just behind Abilene Christian's Amos Sang who took home the gold with a time of 4:00.00. Chris Haerell picked up a top-10 finish for the Texans, placing seventh overall with a time of 4:04.70.
Westyn Rosilies earned nine points for the men's team with a second-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:48.77. Kolin Styles also picked up nine points with his second-place finish in the men's 5K, finishing the event in 15:02.56.
Meredeth Persinger recorded a personal best in the women's shot put on Saturday as she threw a provisional mark of 13.44m. Elizabeth Dominguez then recorded a provisional mark in the women's discus after recording a throw of 43.00m.
"All three throwers that set provisional marks, obviously were the highlights of this weekend's events," Ponder said. "I was very impressed with how our throwers looked and you have to give a lot of credit to coach Melius and the job he has been doing with his athletes."
"I was happy for Persinger as well," Ponder said. "She really deserved that provisional mark. As a matter of fact, she earned it."
The majority of the men's and women's teams will return to action this coming Thursday, April 1, at the McMurry Invitational in Abilene. McNeil, Garrett Thomas and Kandis Brooks will head to Austin to participate in the 83rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
