DURANT, Okla. – The No. 20 Tarleton TexAnn Tennis team picked up two conference wins over the weekend, downing Southeastern Oklahoma (9-0) on Friday and then defeating Central Oklahoma (7-2) on Saturday at SOSU Tennis Courts in Durant, Okla.
“SOSU was coming off a win over East Central and we still wanted to continue working on certain aspects in doubles with the match against them,” Tarleton head tennis coach Lance Drake said. “We were able to do that and accomplish some very good things in that match. SOSU competed hard, but we played steady tennis on Friday and were able to take control of the matches.”
Tarleton swept the doubles matches over SOSU with Mariana Freitas and Rocio Cabanillas defeating Amber Thompson and Camilla Goncalves (8-2); Jade Charlot and Evgeniya Prokofeva defeating Cassandra-Leigh Kleber and Mayra Leal (8-2); and Adrianna Jaskova and Carole Julen defeating Sara Schmidt and Sophia Molina (8-5).
The TexAnns' success in doubles moved over into singles action also, as the TexAnns swept all six matches. Jaskova downed Goncalves (6-0, 6-0), Freitas defeated Kleber (6-3, 6-0), Cabanillas defeated Thompson (4-6, 6-1, 1-0), Charlot defeated Leal (6-2, 6-4), Julen downed Molina (6-1, 6-0) and Prokofeva took care of Schmidt (6-0, 6-1) to give the TexAnns the complete sweep.
On Saturday, the TexAnns were up 2-1 over UCO after doubles play was finished. UCO's Julia Shyiadok and Elizabeth Abramovic defeated Freitas and Cabanillas (8-4) in No. 1 doubles, but No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for Tarleton picked up wins (Charlot/Prokofeva, 8-1 and Jaskova/Julen, 8-0).
Jaskova was the only TexAnn to lose in singles play as she fell (6-4, 0-6, 6-2) to Shyiadok in the first flight. No. 2-6 singles picked up their teammate though, winning the remaining matches.
Freitas downed Abramovic (6-4, 1-6, 6-3), Cabanillas defeated Lacy Caldwell (6-2, 7-6), Charlot defeated Anto Rossini (3-6, 6-4, 6-3), Julen downed Rose Cabato (6-2, 6-3) and Prokofeva downed Lindsey Sweetgall (6-1, 6-0) to give the TexAnns the 7-2 win on the neutral court.
“We knew it would be a tough battle with UCO,” Drake said. “The match lived up to its billing and we were able to come away with the victory as it was a nice, highly-competitive battle.”
The TexAnns improve to 12-5 overall in the spring and 4-1 in Lone Star Conference matches.
Tarleton returns to the court this coming Wednesday, April 7, at Midwestern State.
