Hinton, McNorton win events, Jordan qualifies in shot put at Cactus Cup

KINGSVILLE – Lindsey Hinton and Nikki McNorton won the women's 1500-meter run and the women's high jump, respectively, while Leslie Jordan recorded a provisional qualifying throw in the shot put to highlight the Cactus Cup Meet in Kingsville Saturday.
 
Hinton was two seconds off setting the school mark in the 1500m run with a first-place finishing time of 4:43.06 Saturday, while McNorton claimed her second straight high jump win with a leap of 1.68m.
 
Jordan's throw of 13.56 was a qualifying toss and notched a third place finish. Jordan also finished fourth in discus and fifth in hammer throw.
 
The Tarleton trio paced the way for a fifth place finish for the TexAnns with 83 points.
 
Paige Klein's 12.25 time in the 100m dash and Payton Shoush's 2:19.70 in the 800m run were also good enough to claim second and third place finishes for the TexAnn runners.
 
Celeste Meyer (19:03.40) and Shelby Terry (15.12) notched fourth place finishes in the 5000m run and the 100m hurdles, respectively, while Jenna Duncan was fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.24.
 
The TexAnn 4x400m relay team of Claire Goodman, Klein, Duncan and Diamond Wilson also claimed a top five finish with a time of 4:06.83.
 
Meanwhile, the Tarleton men's team came away from the meet with a fifth place finish and 77 total team points.
 
Tye Doty posted one of the top places among Texan runners with a second-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:36.14 while Jeff Smith finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.13.
 
Cordell Valentine (10.65) and Phillip Hayes (21.95) claimed third place spots in the 100m and 200m dash, respectively. Hayes, Jamal Mays and Gabriel Castillo also finished in the top 10 in the 100m dash among 21 total runners.
 
Cyler Matlock and Kyle Johnson took fourth and fifth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.39 and 15.60, respectively.
 
The Texan relay teams also had top five finishers with the 4x100m relay team of Hayes, Valentine, Castillo and Mays claimed third with a time of 41.73 and the 4x400 team of John Whittington, Castillo, Mays and Brian Cooper finished fifth at 3:24.11.
 
In the field events, Matlock finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.95m while Hayden Eubanks recorded the only other top five field finish with a toss of 48.25 in the discus.

Tarleton will be in action next weekend at the Bobby Lane Invitational at Texas-Arlington.
