SOUTHLAKE – In the first round of the 2012 Lone Star Conference women's tennis tournament, the Tarleton TexAnns have defeated Midwestern State 5-1 to advance to the tournament semifinals.
The TexAnns gained the momentum in the doubles competition with Tarleton's all-conference doubles teams earning victories to begin the match.
Melanie Barnes and Karla Martinez teamed up in the No. 1 spot and defeated Rozike van Rinsburg and Lindsey Holcomb 9-7 while
Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell defeated Sarita Adhikary and Lindsey Buenger 9-8 in the No. 2 seed battle.
Tarleton dropped its only match of the day in the No. 3 doubles slot with an 8-0 loss.
Only the top three singles players earned victories, as
Silvia Nieva, Mitchell and
Kayla Deatherage had their matches unfinished.
Perez earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over van Rinsburg in the top-seeded battle while Martinez (6-0, 6-1) and Barnes (6-2, 6-2) had little trouble taking wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
The TexAnns will advance to the semifinal round where they will play No. 6 Abilene Christian at 8 p.m.
