Box Score 2 ST. LEO, Fl. – Tarleton dropped the final two games of the St. Leo Invitational Tournament Sunday, falling to tournament-host St. Leo 2-0 and Pittsburg State 6-1.
St. Leo 2, Tarleton 0
Tarleton's offensive struggles continued Sunday afternoon as the TexAnns (7-6) dropped their second straight game of the St. Leo Tournament 2-0 to the tournament-host Lions.
Melody Mayse opened the game with an infield single to the shortstop, but was unable to come across as a fielder's choice, a strikeout and a pop up ended the inning.
Randi Fentress was equally as dominating in the pitching circle, throwing up goose eggs over the first two innings before being touched up for two runs in the bottom of the third.
St. Leo led off the third with a single and a stolen base. The runner came around to score on an RBI single to left field. She advanced to second on the throw to the plate and eventually came around to score on a TexAnn error to go up 2-0 after three.
Tarleton coaxed a walk by
Courtney Vroman in the fourth and a single by
Randi Fentress in the fifth but couldn't bring any runs across.
Except for the runs in the third, Fentress was a force in the circle by going the distance and earning the tough-luck loss. She allowed two runs – one earned – on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
Mayse and Fentress recorded Tarleton's only hits of the game – both singles.
Pittsburg State 6, Tarleton 1
In the tournament finale, Tarleton dropped its third straight game with a 6-1 loss to MIAA foe, Pittsburg State.
Arianna Rodriguez put the TexAnns on the board first with a home run down the left field line.
Pittsburg answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the first on a 2-RBI double and an RBI single. They added another run in the second and two more in the third but Tarleton kept the Gorillas at bay over the final three innings.
Over the rest of the game, Tarleton managed just two more base runners – both on Pittsburg State errors.
Brenna Hennan took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits and two walks. Fentress pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing two runs on three hits and a walk before
Katelyn Conlee finished the game with 3.1 innings of shutout relief on three hits.
Rodriguez and
Hannah Hancock (1B) had the only two hits for Tarleton.
The TexAnns will head to San Antonio for the St. Mary's Round Robin Tournament next weekend.
