Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO – On the second day of the St. Mary's Round Robin Tournament, the Tarleton softball team dropped a pair – falling in their first game of the day to NAIA No. 2 Lubbock Christian and then to the host Rattlers in the nightcap.
“We just struggled hitting the ball today,” said Tarleton head coach
Julie Mata. “We weren't making the necessary adjustments. Our defense also let us down in a few key opportunities that costs you big against talented teams.”
No. 2 Lubbock Christian 5, Tarleton 0
Lubbock Christian scored all of its runs in the first three innings as the TexAnn offense failed to string anything together offensively en route to a 5-0 Lady Chaps win.
The first Lady Chaps run came in to score from third after a leadoff single, a stolen base and a groundout put the leadoff hitter at third with one away. She came in for the first run of the game on a throwing error later in the inning.
In the second, LCU tagged on one more run after a leadoff single came around to score with one out on a base hit down the right field line. That put LCU up 2-0 after two.
The big inning came in the third when LCU scored three on an RBI groundout and a 2-RBI single to go up 5-0 after three.
Tarleton had a chance to make some noise in the third with the bases loaded and one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the rally.
The TexAnns just managed four total base runners over the next four innings and couldn't capitalize on the two singles and two hit batters.
Freshman
Katelyn Conlee went the distance for Tarleton – throwing her first collegiate complete game – but earned the loss allowing five runs – four earned – on 10 hits and three walks while striking out two.
Six different TexAnns –
Melody Mayse,
Rachel Brownlow,
Arianna Rodriguez,
Bailee Mauldin,
Amber Clifford and
McKaylee Pittman - recorded a hit for Tarleton.
St. Mary's 6, Tarleton 1
A five-run first inning proved to be the downfall for Tarleton in the tournament finale as the Rattlers used a big opening inning en route to a 6-1 victory.
The big inning came on an error to leadoff the game followed by a sacrifice bunt, three straight walks and a wild pitch to bring two runs across. The big blow of the inning was a 3-run homer to clear the bases with two away.
The Rattlers added one more in the bottom of the first on a throwing error to put St. Mary's up 6-0 despite having earned only two of the runs.
Tarleton was blanked until the seventh inning when
Rachel Brownlow doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a single by Rodriguez. The sophomore came in to score the TexAnns' lone run on an RBI groundout by Clifford.
Randi Fentress pitched the first inning allowing five runs – two earned – on one hit and three walks with two strikeouts.
Brenna Hennan came in and pitched six innings of relief allowing only one unearned run one three walks and four hits while striking out three.
Tarleton only managed three hits on the night, getting the base knocks from Brownlow, Rodriguez and
Courtney Vroman.
The TexAnns return to action next weekend for their final pre-conference tournament as they head north for Joplin, Missouri to take part in the Missouri Southern Tournament.
