SAN ANTONIO – Courtney Vroman entered her senior season of softball having never hit a home run – now she has two in three days, including a two-out walk off bomb to give Tarleton a 4-2 win over Texas-Permian Basin Sunday morning.
“Courtney had a great weekend at the plate and really lifted us up,” said Tarleton head coach
Julie Mata. “This is one of the premiere D2 Fastpitch tournaments in the nation and I was proud of the way this team competed.
“We didn't finish games against some tough teams early on, but we learned from our mistakes and really made some big strides,” she added. “We're young and coming together and I fell really good about our team.”
The redshirt senior from Lorena was named the All-Tournament Team Designated Hitter after hitting .429 with two home runs and six RBIs on the weekend.
Tarleton fell behind early when the Falcons tacked on one in the third on an unearned run and another in the fourth when a leadoff triple came in to score on a sacrifice fly.
Arianna Rodriguez sparked the Tarleton offense in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double to left field and the next batter,
Amber Clifford, kept the party going with a base hit to left to move Rodriguez to third.
After
Eryn Freitas came in to run at first for Clifford,
Hannah Hancock laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with just one away.
Kelsey Latta drove in both runners with a single to right field before being gunned down trying to stretch it into a double.
In the top of the seventh,
Randi Fentress – who replaced
Katelyn Conlee earlier in the game – worked out of a two-out, two-on jam to keep the game tied entering the bottom of the seventh.
Shelby Tinklepaugh led off the final inning with a walk and, after a batter's interference and a pop out, Vroman stepped up and went out to give Tarleton the win.
Clifford (3-3) and Rodriguez (2-3) each had a multi-hit game while Vroman (HR),
Melody Mayse (1B), Latta (1B) and Tinklepaugh (1B) recorded the other hits in the game for Tarleton.
Conlee earned her first collegiate start for Tarleton, pitching 3.1 innings allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Fentress pitched 3.2 innings in shutout relief allowing just one hit and four walks with four strikeouts.
Tarleton will come home to host Texas-Permian Basin and Oklahoma Panhandle in a two-day tournament next weekend at Tarleton Softball Complex. Check out TarletonSports.com for Tournament Central.
