TexAnns split doubleheader with Rattlers

Katelyn Conlee slugged her first collegiate home run in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against St. Mary's.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton salvaged a split with St. Mary's in a weather-shortened Tuesday evening doubleheader, dropping the first game 10-4 before rebounding with a 3-2 win in six innings in the second game.
 
Game 1: St. Mary's 10, Tarleton 4
 
Home runs doomed Tarleton in the first game of the doubleheader as St. Mary's belted four homers en route to a 10-4 victory.
 
After each team threw blanks over the first two innings before the Rattlers broke through first with a three-run home run in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth before the Rattlers took a 7-0 lead in the fifth following a three-homer, four-run inning.
 
The TexAnns battled though by getting on the board in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Bailee Mauldin and a two-run home run by Katelyn Conlee. It was Conlee's first career homer.
 
St. Mary's extended the lead back to six with a two-run top of the sixth to lead 9-3.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Tarleton tacked on one more run when Courtney Vroman was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.
 
St. Mary's added one final run in the seventh on an RBI single to right field.
 
For the game, Tarleton had the bases loaded in three different innings – twice with no one out – but only managed to claim the one run off Vroman's hit by pitch in the sixth.
 
Tarleton left 12 total base runners in the game, including runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Randi Fentress took the loss after going 4.2 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Conlee pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.
 
Amber Clifford had three of the six hits for Tarleton while McKaylee Pittman, Mauldin and Conlee had one each.
 
Game 2: Tarleton 3, St. Mary's 2 (6)
 
Brenna Hennan won her third straight decision – and her third in five days – as she lifted the TexAnns to a game two victory over St. Mary's in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday night.
 
The sophomore hurler improved to 7-4 overall and 6-0 at home by tossing five innings of two-hit ball on four hits, four walks and six strikeouts.
 
Tarleton got on the board first with two in the bottom of the first.
 
An error by the St. Mary's pitcher opened the flood gates for both runs to come across as Melody Mayse and Arianna Rodriguez reached on back-to-back singles before the error allowed Mayse to come across. Mauldin drove in Rodriguez with a fielder's choice.
 
St. Mary's got one back in the top of the third on and RBI single and tied it in the fourth on an RBI double.
 
Tarleton regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double by Rachel Brownlow to plate Eryn Freitas.
 
Mayse was 2-3 at  the plate while Brownlow, Rodriguez, Mauldin and Shelby Tinklepaugh recorded the other hits for Tarleton.
 
The TexAnns will resume Lone Star Conference action next weekend with a three-game set at Abilene Christian beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
