Box Score 2 SAN ANGELO – Tarleton exploded for seven runs over the final two innings of Saturday's series finale as the TexAnns salvaged game three of their weekend series against Angelo, falling 11-9 in the first game and winning 7-5 in the second.
"Brenna (Hennan) pitched really well today," said Tarleton head coach
Julie Mata. "We put her in a few jams defensively, but she and the team fought back. The team showed a lot of heart in the sixth and seventh innings (of game two). They showed a great deal of character at the end and that's as valuable as any win."
Game 1: Angelo State 11, Tarleton 9
Tarleton jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead over the first inning and a half in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but the TexAnns couldn't hold on as Angelo State scored in every inning en route to an 11-9 win.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the first, Tarleton struck first on a 2-RBI double to left by
Amber Clifford – plating
Melody Mayse and
Arianna Rodriguez – to put Tarleton up 2-0 early.
After ASU tied the game at 2-2, the TexAnns exploded for a four-spot in the top of the second on a bases loaded walk by Rodriguez and a bases-clearing double by
Bailee Mauldin to give the TexAnns their 6-2 edge.
The Rambelles answered back with a three spot in the bottom of the second to make it 6-5 in favor of Tarleton, but the TexAnns only managed one base runner in the top of the third while Angelo took the lead with a two-run bottom of the third.
Tarleton managed to tie the game once again in the top of the fourth when
McKaylee Pittman laced a double down the left field line to bring home
Kelsey Latta for a 7-7 game.
ASU scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth while holding Tarleton scoreless in the fifth to lead 10-7.
Katelyn Conlee drove home one in the sixth while
Courtney Vroman homered in the seventh with an ASU home run sandwiched into the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to its final tally.
Randi Fentress took the loss, pitching just 2.2 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks. Conlee provided 3.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks.
Tarleton's offense tallied 12 total hits on the day with Latta (2-4), Pittman (3-3), Conlee (2-2) and Vroman (2-4) having multi-hit games. Mauldin, Clifford and Fentress had one hit each.
Game 2: Tarleton 7, Angelo State 5
A six-run sixth inning and a solo blast from
Bailee Mauldin in the seventh secured a win in the series finale for Tarleton Saturday afternoon as the TexAnns topped the Rambelles 7-5.
This marks just the second win for Tarleton against Angelo State since March 7, 2009 and the first win in San Angelo since March 1, 2008.
Angelo State struck first with two in the opening frame and one more in the second to take a 3-0 lead, which they carried into the sixth inning before the TexAnn offense exploded.
Having been held to only one hit over the first five innings, Latta got things started with a single before a hit by pitch and a Mauldin single loaded the bases with nobody out.
Pittman got Tarleton on the board with an RBI single to left to bring home Latta before Clifford followed suit with an RBI single through the left side to plate Rodriguez and make it a 3-2 game. Mauldin scored a few pitches later when the runners advanced on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
Tarleton took the lead on an error that allowed pinch runner
Lauren Grisham to score and Clifford as well as the batter Fentress to move to third and second with just one out.
The final blow of the inning came next with a pinch-hit, two-run single from
Hannah Hancock to bring home Clifford and Fentress for a 6-3 lead. Tarleton had a chance for more with two on and one out, but had to settle for six in the inning.
"Pinch hitting is one of the toughest assignments in the game and Hannah came through in a big spot for us right when we needed it," said Mata.
In the bottom of the sixth, Tarleton starter
Brenna Hennan nearly worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no runs coming across before a two-out error allowed a pair of Rambelles to score and cut the Tarleton lead to just 6-5 heading into the final inning.
Tarleton got one of those runs back quickly in the seventh when Mauldin led off the inning with a big fly to left field for a 7-5 Tarleton lead.
Hennan allowed a leadoff double in the final frame, but got back-to-back fly outs and a groundout to third to seal the win for Tarleton.
The sophomore starter for Tarleton earned the win after throwing all seven innings, allowing five runs – only one earned – on eight hits and three walks.
Mauldin and Mayse each went 2-4 while Latta, Pittman, Clifford and Hancock had one hit each for Tarleton in the second game of the twin bill.
Tarleton will travel to Denton Tuesday night for its final regular season meeting against Texas Woman's at 6 p.m.
