Tarleton Volleyball earns seventh sweep of season with win over St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton State got back in the win column Tuesday night with their seventh sweep of the season – this one coming on the road against St. Mary's.

For Tarleton, this marks the first win in the last three meetings over the Rattlers dating back to 2010.

After the Rattlers score the first point of the game, Tarleton's Kaitlyn White evened things up and never looked back as the TexAnns dominated the opening set on the strength of a 23-11 run in which the TexAnns kept St. Mary's from ever scoring consecutive points.

The first consecutive Rattler points came on back-to-back TexAnn errors to make it 23-13 but a kill from Ashley Rine and a block from Kenya Alexander sealed the first set for Tarleton.

Tarleton's dominance carried over into the second set as the TexAnns jumped out to a 9-3 advantage.

A furious rally from St. Mary's pulled the Rattlers within two on several occasions and as close as one point at 20-21, but a kill from Hailey Roberts made it 22-20 and started a quick 3-1 TexAnn push down the stretch to pull away late in the set. White landed the game-winner off a pass from Chandler Gow to take the set 25-21.

Tarleton was forced to battle from behind in the third set after falling behind 6-2 from the get-go, but a Kelsey Raglin kill shot started a 9-3 Tarleton run to give them an 11-9 advantage.

The teams stayed tight through 15-14 before a Rattler error and a Roberts service ace pushed the TexAnn lead to 17-14 and forced a St. Mary's timeout. Out of the break, Tarleton scored two more to extend the lead to a game-high five at 19-14.

The Rattlers fought back to get within one at 23-33 but the TexAnns slammed the door with a kill from Raglin off an Emily Medlin pass and a game-winning Rattler error for the 25-22 win.

Roberts led the TexAnns with nine kills while White checked in with eight of her own. Raglin, Jasmyne Brown and Alexander each had six kills. Brown added a team-high six blocks. Medlin (23) and Gow (13) combined for 36 assists while Katie Covell led the team in digs with 13.

Tarleton will return home this weekend for Lone Star Conference action as they host rivals Midwestern State and Cameron, beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. The TexAnns and Aggies will play at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
