TexAnns sweep Zias on Halloween for win No. 20

Tarleton State secured its fifth 20-win season in the last 10 years with revenge sweep of Eastern New Mexico

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State put a monster mashing on Eastern New Mexico Friday night in a revenge sweep of the Zias to secure the fifth 20-win season under head coach Mary Schindler.

Schindler now has five 20-win seasons in her 10-year tenure at Tarleton State. Tarleton had just five 20-win seasons in its history prior to her arrival in 2005.

Tarleton got on the board first with a block from Kenya Alexander and Kaitlyn White and the game stayed even through the first eight points. An ENMU error broke the tie, however, and started a quick 3-0 push for the TexAnns to take the last lead they would need.

From 7-5, Tarleton extended the lead to 20-11 with a 13-6 run. Despite a quick Zia surge to pull within 20-16, the TexAnns finished it off with a 5-1 run and won the math on a game-winning block from Jasmyne Brown and Kaitlyn White.

In the second set, Tarleton held a slim advantage through the first 17 points to lead 10-7 before another Zia error opened the door for the TexAnns to score 15 of the next 20 points, capping off the run with a Hailey Roberts service ace, for a 25-12 victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Tarleton carried the momentum over to the final game and jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead. Despite letting Eastern back into the game at 20-15, Kaitlyn White got the TexAnns back on track with an ace that started a 5-2 TexAnn run to win the game. The final point came on a Katie Covell service ace.

The Tarleton defense held the Zias in check, to the tune of a (-).031 hitting percentage for the match. Eastern landed just 25 kills in three matches while committing 28 errors on 98 attacks. The TexAnns managed 12 blocks.

Meanwhile, the TexAnn offense hit .198 as a team with 31 kills and 13 errors on 91 attempts. Kelsey Raglin led the team with 10 kills on a .491 hitting percentage. Emily Medlin (15) and Chandler Gow (11) combined for 26 assists while Kaitlyn White led the team with 11 digs.

Tarleton will be back in action Saturday afternoon in the final home match of the season. The regular season finale, which is also senior day, will feature the No. 5 and No. 6 teams in the South Central regional rankings – West Texas A&M and Tarleton – at 2 p.m.
