TexAnns split second day of WT Invitational with win over Adams State

Melody Mayse drove in the final run of the afternoon as her RBI single in the sixth inning gave Tarleton the final 4-1 lead over Adams State Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON – Tarleton State dropped the first game of the second day at the WT Woodward Invitational but rebounded in the second game to knock off Adams State 4-1 behind a bases-clearing double from Katelyn Conlee and a complete-game pitching performance by Randi Fentress.

Game 1: Metro State 7, Tarleton 2

Tarleton left 10 runners on base, including at least one runner in every inning, in their first game Saturday afternoon as the Metro State Roadrunners handed the TexAnns a 7-2 loss in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

After the TexAnns stranded three baserunners over the first two innings, Metro State got the scoring started in the bottom of the second with three straight RBI singles to go up 3-0.

The teams traded goose eggs through the third and Tarleton was finally able to capitalize in the top of the fourth when Katelyn Conlee came in to score on a wild pitch. Conlee pinch ran for Ashley Findorak, who led off the inning with a single.

The Roadrunners broke the game open with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth with two unearned runs and a 2-RBI triple to right center to extend the lead to 7-1.

After a pair of zero's in the fifth inning, Tarleton added one more run on an RBI groundout from Eryn Freitas to plate Miranda West. West pinch ran for Amber Clifford, who laced a one-out double.

Brenna Hennan took the loss, despite allowing no earned runs. She surrendered three unearned runs on five hits. She was replaced after two innings by Randi Fentress, who threw the final four innings allowing four runs – three earned – on two hits with two strikeouts.

Mikayla Stogsdill had the first multi-hit game of her career in her first career start in the leadoff spot, going 3-4. Findorak and Clifford also had two hits each while Melody Mayse, Bailee Mauldin, Kendra Mendoza and Rachel Brownlow had the rest of Tarleton's 11 hits.

Game 2: Tarleton 4, Adams State 1

In the final game of Saturday's doubleheader, Tarleton rebounded from the game one loss by knocking off Adams State 4-1 behind a complete-game pitching performance by Fentress.

Tarleton fell behind early on as the Grizzlies got to Fentress in the bottom of the first when a lead-off single eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to give Adams State a 1-0 advantage. Fentress kept ASU at bay with a swinging strikeout to end the first.

After three scoreless frames, Tarleton exploded for three runs in the top of the fifth when Conlee unloaded the bases with a double to left center – bringing home Freitas, Kelsey Latta and West.

Tarleton added one more insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Mayse to plate Freitas.

Fentress didn't need the insurance on Saturday as she polished off her complete game by allowing just one baserunner over the final two frames. En route to the win, she allowed the one run on three hits and three walks to go along with six strikeouts.

As a team, Tarleton collected eight hits in the game with Mauldin (2-4) and Latta (2-3) earning multi-hit games and Mayse, Conlee, Clifford and West adding on hit each.

Tarleton will finish off the tournament tomorrow afternoon, beginning with an 11 a.m. game against Fort Lewis.
