TexAnn Softball drops tournament finale to host St. Mary's Sunday

Randi Fentress struck out six of the seven batters she faced in relief Sunday against No. 14 St. Mary's.
Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton State was shutout in the tournament finale of the Rattler Invitational by hosting, St. Mary's, 6-0 Sunday afternoon.

Tarleton fell in an early hole as the Rattlers put two on the board in the bottom of the first inning. This marks the third time in this five-game tournament that Tarleton has fallen behind after the first inning and they were forced to play from behind at some point in all five games.

St. Mary's struck on a one-out, 2-RBI single to right field with the bases loaded after a single and two walks filled the bases on Tarleton starter, Brenna Hennan. The junior pitcher managed a swinging strikeout and a pop up to shortstop to end the threat at two.

After Hennan sat down the side in order in the second, the Rattlers added a third run in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to left center for a 3-0 St. Mary's lead. The Rattlers tacked on their final three in the next inning when Tarleton let two unearned runs score on errors and a sacrifice fly bring home the final run.

Meanwhile, the Tarleton offense could get nothing accomplished as they had a Melody Mayse single with one out in the second, an error by the Rattler pitcher that allowed Mikayla Stogsdill to reach in the fourth and a Kendra Mendoza single with two outs in the fourth.

Hennan took the loss and fell to 4-5 on the season after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing all six runs – three earned – on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Randi Fentress pitched the final 2.1 innings of relief and shutout the Rattlers by striking out six of the seven total batters she faced.

For the TexAnns, they have now lost six of their last seven games – three of which were to No. 14 St. Mary's – and have been shutout in three of those six losses.

Tarleton returns home next weekend to begin Lone Star Conference play when they host Angelo State for a three-game series beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
