TexAnns drop rubber game to No. 25 Angelo State Saturday

Bailee Mauldin blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning to put the TexAnns on the board but Tarleton fell to Angelo State 5-1 Saturday afternoon.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State left eight runners on base and could only manage one run on a solo homer by Bailee Mauldin in the sixth as the TexAnns dropped the rubber game against No. 25 Angelo State 5-1 Saturday afternoon.

Angelo State got the scoring started when a one-out walk led to a 2-run homer for an early 2-0 lead for the Rambelles. A double to the gap followed the long ball, but Tarleton starter, Randi Fentress stopped the bleeding with a fly ball to left and a ground ball to second base.

Tarleton had a big chance to tie and take the lead after a walk, a single and a passed put Mikayla Stogsdill on third and Taylor Wells on second with just one away. Unfortunately for Tarleton, back-to-back strikeouts ended the rally and kept it 2-0.

Fentress kept the Angelo offense in check and matched her Rambelle counterpart zero-for-zero over the next two innings.

Angelo State struck for two in the fourth and one in the fifth, however, to take a 5-0 lead.

Mauldin led off the sixth with her bomb to left center field but Tarleton couldn't add any more to the scoreboard despite a two-out base hit by Kendra Mendoza to left field. An infield popup ended the TexAnn threat.

Fentress kept the Rambelles off the board in the seventh and pinch hitter Rylie Chappell led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, but Tarleton couldn't score as the Rambelles went on to take the game and the series.

For the second straight day, Fentress threw a complete game allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Over the past two days, Fentress threw 17 innings on 343 pitches – following Friday's 217-pitch performance with 126 Saturday.

Mendoza was the only TexAnns with a multi-hit effort, going 2-3 at the plate. Tarleton got one hit each from Stogsdill, Melody Mayse, Wells, Mauldin and Erika Menchaca.

Tarleton will be on the road next weekend for a three-game visit to Kingsville beginning with a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday against the Javelinas and wrapping up with a 1 p.m. afternoon game.
