LAST TIME OUT
Tarleton State went to the inaugural Lone Star Conference Softball Showcase in Wichita Falls and suffered a field and weather shortened trip. The tournament was originally slated to be a six-game, four-day tournament against LSC rivals but, after the Wichita Falls city field proved to be unplayable, the tournament was shortened to just three games in three days. Tarleton got games in against Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville, but the final game against No. 25 Angelo State was cancelled due to rain. The shortened tournament caused the remaining three-game LSC series to be pushed to four-game series over the remainder of the season.
SERIES HISTORY
Tarleton and Eastern New Mexico have played each other 63 times since the beginning of the series in 1997 with the TexAnns holding a 50-13 lead in the series. The TexAnns jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the series midway through the 2002 season before Tarleton started a run of 15 straight wins over the Zias from 2002-06. ENMU won four of the next six against Tarleton until 2007, but the TexAnns answered right back by winning 16 straight and 17 of the last 18 heading into this weekend.
TWO AWAY FROM 500
Tarleton head coach
Julie Mata is two wins away from history. The 18th year head coach of the TexAnns currently has 498 wins in her illustrious Tarleton career and with two more will reach 500. Mata is only the second coach in the history of the Tarleton softball program after taking over the program in 1997 following its inaugural season in 1996. She has led Tarleton to 12 LSC Championship Tournaments and three NCAA Regional tournaments in the school's 18-year softball history.
CLIFFORD, MAYSE TURNING IT ON IN LSC PLAY
In the nine Lone Star Conference games this season, Tarleton's
Amber Clifford and
Melody Mayse have skyrocketed into the LSC's top 10 in multiple hitting categories. Clifford is sixth in conference play with a .500 batting average, fifth in hits with 14 and is the LSC leader in conference games with seven doubles. As for Mayse, the sophomore outfielder is hitting .444 over the last nine league games with 16 hits, which is second in the LSC, to go along with 26 totals bases.
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
Tarleton will head to Canyon for a four-game series against West Texas A&M, beginning with a Friday doubleheader at 5 p.m. and wrapping up with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
