Box Score 2 CANYON – Tarleton wrapped up its four-game series at No. 1 West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon by dropping both games Saturday afternoon on the way to a four-game sweep at Schaeffer Park over the weekend.
Game 1: West Texas A&M 12, Tarleton 1 (5)
In the third game of the series to open Saturday's doubleheader, the Lady Buffs jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the first two innings of play en route to knocking off the TexAnns 12-1.
The TexAnns had something cooking in the opening frame as
Mikayla Stogsdill,
Bailee Mauldin and
Katelyn Conlee hit three straight singles to load the bases with one away. A pop up to the catcher and a strikeout, however, ended the threat and left the bases loaded after the first half inning.
West Texas A&M plated four in the first as a sacrifice fly turned into the first two runs when an errant throw allowed a second run to score. They would later add a pair of RBI singles to take a 4-0 lead after one.
After the TexAnns were sat down in order via strikeouts in the top of the second, West Texas A&M pulled away with a seven spot in the second. They scored seven runs on three hits and an error with the big blows coming on a 2-RBI single and a 2-RBI triple to right center.
WT added their final run in the third before Tarleton got on the board with an RBI double from
Amber Clifford to bring home
Randi Fentress in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to keep the game alive.
Conlee got the start and took the loss, allowing 11 runs – nine earned – on eight hits and six walks in just 1.2 innings of work. Fentress pitched the final 2.1 innings of relief and allowing one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Tarleton got seven hits on the afternoon – one each from Stogsdill, Mauldin, Conlee, Fentress,
Taylor Wells,
Kendra Mendoza and Clifford. The hits by Fentress, Wells and Clifford went for two bases.
Game 2: West Texas A&M 14, Tarleton 6 (5)
Tarleton's offense came to life in the series finale, but West Texas A&M continued to swing the sticks and the Lady Buffs prevailed in a game-four slugfest 14-6.
Once again, Tarleton spotted West Texas A&M a double-digit lead after the first two innings as WT scored three in the first and eight in the second.
Erika Menchaca got Tarleton on the board in the second to make it a 3-1 game at the time before the eight-run second broke the game open. The TexAnns got in the board again in the third when three straight two-out singles by
Rachel Brownlow, Conlee and Wells put Tarleton in the run column with a run on three hits in the inning.
After the teams traded scoreless half-innings, WT added on two more runs for a 13-2 lead.
Tarleton put up a fight in the fifth to extend the game, scoring five runs.
Amber Clifford plated a pair with a bases-loaded, 2-RBI single to left center before Menchaca drove in her second run of the game with an RBI single up the middle.
Kelsey Latta extended the game out by driving home Mauldin with an RBI single of her own.
WT ended the game in the next half-inning, however, with back-to-back doubles to take an eight-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Brenna Hennan took the loss, throwing 1.2 innings allowing 11 runs – just three earned – on six hits and four walks. Fentress once again pitched in relief, throwing 2.2 innings allowing three runs on five hits and one walk.
The Tarleton offense mustered nine hits in the finale with Menchaca and Conlee recording two each.
Melody Mayse, Brownlow, Wells, Clifford and Latta were responsible for the rest of the offense.
Tarleton will play a Tuesday night doubleheader at Texas-Permian Basin before coming home next weekend to resume LSC action when they host Cameron for back-to-back doubleheaders beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
