TexAnns swept Saturday in Denton doubleheader

Katelyn Conlee blasted a two-out home run in the first inning of game one Saturday afternoon against Texas Woman's.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENTON – Tarleton State suffered a doubleheader sweep in their single-day visit to Denton Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Texas Woman's 3, Tarleton 1

Tarleton State found itself on the wrong side of an old-fashioned pitcher's duel in game of Saturday's doubleheader as the TexAnns dropped the opening game 3-1 at Pioneer Field.

The TexAnns got on the board first as Katelyn Conlee blasted a two-out home run to right field for a 1-0 Tarleton lead.

Conlee's first inning home run off Texas Woman's starter, Brandie Lander, is the first run Lander has allowed since March 29 against Eastern New Mexico. The scoreless stretch for Lander covered three starts and a relief appearance.

The Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead on a passed ball that allowed the first to come across and an RBI bunt single to plate the second.

From that point on, Tarleton starter Brenna Hennan kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard for the next four innings. However, the TexAnn offense was unable to get any runs across despite having four runners on base over the next three innings.

After Texas Woman's tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, Tarleton made some noise in the seventh inning when Erika Menchaca led off the inning with a walk and Kelsey Latta followed up with a single through the left side.

Nothing would come across, however, as a fly ball and back-to-back strikeouts ended the rally effort and the game with a final score of 3-1.

Hennan took the tough-luck loss after pitching all six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and one walk and striking out four.

Tarleton mustered six hits in game one, all from different TexAnns. Conlee's home run and a double from Menchaca were the only extra base hits for the day while singles from Mikayla Stogsdill, Amber Clifford, Latta and Lauren Grisham rounded out the Tarleton offense.

Game 2: Texas Woman's 8, Tarleton 0 (6)

In game two against the Pioneers, Tarleton's offense continued to struggle as the TexAnns were on the wrong side of a 8-0 shutout.

Over the first six innings, Tarleton had only three innings with baserunners.

Tarleton had a lead-off walk and single in the top of the second before a double play ended the Tarleton rally. Another twin killing erased a lead-off single in the fifth inning as well.

In the top of the sixth, Tarleton had a chance to crack the scoreboard once again with runners on second and third with two away but a strikeout ended that rally.

Meanwhile, the Pioneers posted a three-spot in both in the first and second innings to lead 6-0 after two. Texas Woman's put the game away in the sixth with an RBI double and an RBI single to bring the score to 8-0 and end the game an inning short.

Randi Fentress took the loss with 5.2 innings allowing eight runs – five earned – on 13 hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Tarleton had just four hits with two of them coming off the bat of Clifford, who was 2-2 at the dish. Melody Mayse and Stogsdill had one hit each.

The TexAnns and Pioneers will return to action next Thursday, this time in Stephenville, at 4 p.m.
