CANYON – For the second time in less than 24 hours, Tarleton needed a valiant comeback to earn a win on the road against a Lone Star Conference rival.
And just like the night before, these TexAnns threw down the gauntlet and found a way to win – this time with a five-set win over West Texas A&M to sweep the regular season series against the Lady Buffs for the first time in school history.
Despite putting on a dominating performance in the second set for a 25-14 win on a .310 hitting percentage, Tarleton went into the fourth set down 1-2 in the match after dropping the first (18-25) and third (21-25) sets to force the TexAnns into comeback mode.
Tarleton came out swinging in the fourth set as the TexAnns built a 20-17 lead down the stretch, forcing a West Texas A&M timeout after the first 37 points of the set.
The Lady Buffs pushed back with a 6-2 run to take a 23-22 lead and forcing Tarleton head coach
Mary Schindler to take a timeout of her own to set up a similar situation to last night's match against Eastern New Mexico when Tarleton found itself down 22-20 to the Greyhound in the third set and down 0-2 in the match.
Just like last night, the TexAnns responded in a big way – beginning with a kill shot from
Xzache Mathis to even things up at 23-23.
The teams traded points on errors to even the score at 24-24 and force the final timeout of the set from West Texas A&M. Out of the break,
Hailey Roberts went to work by powering down back-to-back kill shots, both off passes from
Chandler Gow, to secure the set 26-24.
The fifth set opened in a 3-3 tie early before a kill from
Kelsey Raglin swung the momentum to Tarleton. Raglin's kill shot started a 7-0 TexAnn run. The run was highlighted with
Macie Walker serving up the final six points of the run with one West Texas A&M error, one Roberts kill, and four straight blocks by
Kenya Alexander – three of which were assisted on by
Cassandra Cutbirth – to extend Tarleton's lead 10-3.
West Texas A&M pushed back to pull within 12-10 before Tarleton put the game away with three straight points on kills from Cutbirth and Roberts to go along with the match-ending error by West Texas A&M.
Hailey Roberts led the way with her 16
th double-double of the season, pouring in 23 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Mathis added 14 kills of her own, marking her fifth straight double-digit kill effort and sixth in her last seven games.
Chandler Gow dished out 45 assists for Tarleton, which is her sixth consecutive 40-assist game and eighth in her last nine matches. She also added 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Ayssa Garcia (12) and
Adrianna Knutson (10) combined for 22 digs while Alexander, the defending LSC Defensive Player of the Week, had 11 blocks.
Tarleton will be back in action Tuesday night when the TexAnns visit Texas A&M-Commerce at 6 p.m.
