TexAnns down Texas Wesleyan for third straight sweep

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton volleyball cruised to a 3-0 victory over Texas Wesleyan at the Wisdom Volleyball Gym on Monday night.
 
The TexAnns jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set with Chandler Gow serving four straight points including an ace.
 
Texas Wesleyan fought back to make it a 13-11 game, but Tarleton responded with a 9-1 run to pull ahead and win the opening set 25-14. Hailey Roberts, Meg Umbel and Kelsey Raglin all had four kills in the opening set and Gow provided 11 assists to pave the way early.
 
The TexAnns controlled the entire second set by taking an early double-digit lead at 14-4 and not looking back. During the early run, Tarleton spread the ball all across the court and getting kills from Roberts, Raglin, Umbel, Kenya Alexander and Xzache Mathis all within the first nine points.
 
A service ace by Ayssa Garcia gave Tarleton a 20-10 advantage leading to another 25-14 win in set two to take a 2-0 lead over the Lady Rams.
 
Texas Wesleyan wouldn't go away easy to start the third set as the Lady Rams took their first lead of the match at 1-2 and later a 5-6 lead over Tarleton. After an 8-8 tie, the TexAnns regrouped and pulled away by going on a 10-0 run all served by Kenya Alexander to take an 18-8 lead over Texas Wesleyan.
 
Leading 23-15, Cassandra Cutbirth had kills in two of the final three points to win 25-15 and complete the sweep for the TexAnns.
 
Roberts had 14 kills to pace the TexAnns, giving the sophomore 17 straight double-digit kill games. Kelsey Raglin followed with nine kills with a .562 attack percentage while Meg Umbel, Kenya Alexander and Xzache Mathis added five kills each. Umbel also had a game-high seven blocks.
 
Chandler Gow's 37 assists led both teams and Adrianna Knutson had 13 digs followed by Ayssa Garcia with 11.
 
The win moves Tarleton to 8-2 on the year as they head into Lone Star Conference play. The TexAnns will travel to Angelo State on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
