Tarleton Cross Country has strong performances at Chile Pepper Festival

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Tarleton men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 28th annual Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday with the Texans coming in 13th and the TexAnns placing 10th.
 
As both teams gear up for the Lone Star Conference championship in three weeks, the Texans and TexAnns more importantly finished ahead of all LSC teams in the meet. With 464 points, the Texans placed ahead of LSC rivals Texas A&M-Commerce (18th, 547 points), Eastern New Mexico (22nd, 628 points) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (27th, 771 points). The TexAnns, who had 322 points, finished in front of Eastern New Mexico (13th, 367 points), Texas A&M-Commerce (19th, 586 points) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (22nd, 644 points).
 
Peyton Heinig had his best time of the season to lead the Texans in 51st place, finishing the 8,000-meter course in 25:39.2. Heinig shed 27 seconds off his previous best time set last week at the Texas A&M Invitational. Jarred Elizondo finished in 72nd in a time of 26:01.5, his best time of the of the season by 26 seconds. Joshua Perez came in 82nd after running 26:12.79. Michael Simcho, last week's LSC Runner of the Week, came in 98th in a time of 26:25.95. Andrew Clark finished in a time of 27:18.71 for 161st place and Quenten Lasseter recorded a time of 27:31.36.
 
For the TexAnns, Katelin Huckabee, the reigning LSC Runner of the Week, led the women's team for the third straight meet coming in 31st (out of 254 Division II runners) in a time of 18:22.29 in the 5,000-meter course. Esmeralda Fuentes finished in 52nd in 18:48.85 and Andelynn Carlton placed in 71st with a time of 19:16.56. Gretzel Jimenez was not far behind Carlton, placing 76th in 19:19.7. Gabrielle Howes ran a 19:35.3, good for 92nd place and Emily Ayers recorded a time of 19:40.16 for 101st place. Molly Cross came in 149th place in a time of 20:21.22.
 
The Texans and TexAnns will compete at the Angelo State Blue/Gold Invitational on Oct. 11 in San Angelo, Texas.
